This is the same tournament called Xin'ao Cup (ENN Cup). Its preliminary tournament was held in May this year.

Doesn't 申五倍 transliterate to shen wu bei? Why "Shinyao" or "Xin'ao?"

I had to check his name on Sensei's Library, turns out he was doing the count-down in the NHK cup not so long ago (and was 2-3 dan I guess). I remember seeing him playing in the said tournament a couple of months ago and wondering how he got 7-dan so quick :)

I don't like this draw, to be honest. Dong ge is paired with Shi Yue, meaning one of them will be eliminated right away (probably Dong ge) :(

Mi yuting is paired with Chen yaoye in the first match.

Park, Lee and Shin gets easy draws as usual.

Two Japanese players are in the same group, which, IMO, is not good because I hope Japan can at least get a few rounds in. Then again, it might be a good thing they're in the same group, because if they win, then a Japanese player is guaranteed to go through.

A few more thoughts:

1. Ke Jie and Tang Weixing could meet in the second round.
2. Kang Dongyun and Kim Jiseok got drawn in the same group, and they have to deal with another world champion in Fan Tingyu.
3. Yu Bin may get to play Park again.
4. Group 4, 7, and 13 don't have any particular strong players.

Wow, Gu Li lost to Fang Tianfeng. Mr Fang is roughly the same generation as Nie Weiping. He was the Chinese national champion in 1985 if I remember correctly.

Also Mr Fang was the teacher of Liu Yuanbo 2p who is known to Western players for teaching/organising various China Go trips and playing on KGS as MilanMilan. He didn't visit the 2007 trip I attended but did in 2010 and Andrew Kay has records of some games/lectures involving him: http://andrewkay.name/go/.

I took Mr. Fang's interesting class about Go and Culture in college :) Never thought he could advance in an international tournament by beating players like Gu Li

I just had a look at the Gu - Fang game, the ending was pretty spectacular with several semeais including one with a temprary seki that was a bunch of virtual liberties as the group on the other side of the seki would need to capture a dead group before being able to break the seki.

great results. Although it's a shame huang yusong lost to shin jinseo, it was expected.

But lee sedol losing was unexpected :D

And Peng Quang Laoshi also won, which is great. And ida atsushi also move on to rd of 16, so basically, almost a perfect round, other than huang vs shin.

I would call it a bad round for Korea. I think Kim Jiseok's form is better than Kang Dongyun now, so I would prefer him to advance instead. Now the pressure is on Shin Jiseo.

I think idontgetit is (at least part) Chinese!

Winners in bold:
Shi Yue vs. An Sungjoon
Chen Yaoye vs. Xia Chenkun
Kang Dongyun vs. Kim Jiseok ........... 2 biggies
Han Seungjoo vs. Paek Hongseok ........... surprise
Shin Jinseo vs. Huang Yunsong
Lian Xiao vs. Byun Sangil
Ida Atsushi vs. Chen Xian ........... only Japanese
Peng Liyao vs. Jiang Weijie ........... bit of a surprise
Fan Yunruo vs. Wang Shiyi
Shu Yixiao vs. Fang Tianfeng ........... Old guy Chinese #150 beats Chinese #139
Tan Xiao vs. Xu Jiayang
Tang Weixing vs. Ke Jie ........... 2 biggies
Li Zhe vs. Li Kang
Cho Hanseung vs. Zhou Ruiyang
Kim Kiyoung vs. Lee Sedol ........... big upset!
Hu Yuefeng vs. Peng Quan

As for Lee Sedol's game, I don't understand why he made that monster ko at top right when he didn't have enough threats, or at least answer white's threat move 54 at b6 in a submissive but threat-minimising way (though why didn't white cut at b6 as threat?). Once that corner died and he got weak groups on both the left and lower sides it seemed game over despite the top side profit, though full credit to Kim Kiyoung for dealing solidly with the bad aji and flailing cutting stones that Lee Sedol so often manages to find some magic with (e.g. resurrection of "dead" traded stones in last game).

Kim Jiseok vs Kang Dongyun was a pretty spectacular sabaki inside a moyo and over in 101 moves. Also started with the close approach to the Kobayashi that's making a comeback.
