I failed to finish reporting the results for the 2nd Women's Korean Baduk League. This year, hope to simply report the results and game record links of both the WKBL and SKBL each saturday since I have not yet seen them in an english tournament sheet yet.

2018 Women's Korean Baduk League

In 2015, the WKBL consisted of seven teams.

In 2016 and in 2017, it consisted of eight teams.

In 2018, nine teams participate in a double round robin (totaling 18 rounds, 72 team matches and 216 individual games) with an ₩840,000,000 ($780024/£558458 24.02.2018) prize pool.
The player selection ceremony occurred on January 31, and the two hour opening ceremony occurred on February 20th.
After the leagues, the fifth and fourth placed teams play in a wildcard playoff match of two rounds with the fourth placed team needing to win one out of two rounds of matches, and the fifth placed team needing to win both rounds, the winner of which plays a qausi-playoff against the third placed team, the winner of which plays in a playoff against the second placed team, the winner of which plays in the championship match against the first placed team (a playoff ladder system somewhat similar to the Japanese Kisei).

Each team represents a city/town in Korea and a sponsor (the sponsor can be a company or the city itself).

Matches consist of a slow game (60m+5*40s byo-yomi) and two fast games played one after the other (10m+5*40s byo-yomi)

The board positions can be changed for each match

The winning team takes away ₩50,000,000

Several Chinese sources reported that this player (http://www.baduk.or.kr/info/player_view ... e=10000998) played for the Buan (Gomso Salt) team. Where do you get your player information? I am not so sure about the translation of her name either.

There was actually an error on the official result page in which the information for Kang Jisoo 1p was shown instead.

I thought that I might then simply put in Heo Seohyun, the spelling on the website, however, as I had assumed she was a Korean player due to her board placement, and the fact that they had already made an error on the page, I wanted to double check and see if her name was in the http://www.go4go.net database via goratings as I thought that there should be a good chance she has either played in the WKBL before or that she played a high enough level match to have a game in the go4go database— as I assumed she was Korean and searched for the Korean transliteration of her name, I did not find her entry. I thought that it may be best to put in the player with the closest spelling as it may be a misspell considering there was already an error on the page, and wait for you to transcribe the games for her match so that I can check it and finally correct it for sure.

Is she a Chinese player who plays in Korea or is she a foreign candidate player?

Round 1, Game 1, 2018.02.22 Thursday

Song Hyeryung 2p-Gao Xing 4p
W+R after 142 moves

As it was foreign candidate Gao Xing 4p's first time in the league, there was some anxiety pertaining to how she might perform and adjust to the league. But she overwhelmed Song 2p from the start, winning in less than an hour.

She only quite recently became professional. She has not shown up in other tournament yet. She is definitely Korean.

Kim Miri gave Rui Naiwei a taste of her own medicine with an impressive kill. It all started with an attack/cut at this shape's vital point. White then ran all the way to the right side but only made 1 eye and failed to kill surrounding Black groups.

P.s It's Posco not Poscho: they are a big steel company (I visited their factory as part of the physics olympiad in Pohang some years ago).

Saying they are a big steelmaker is like saying Roger Federer is a good tennis player :) I went there as part of Maggie Thatcher's press entourage. I'd been to steel works before but this was pretty mind-blowing - not just the size but the fact that there were so few humans around.

But if it's being nice to go sponsors time (which I approve of) I believe their official English name is POSCO as they see it as an acronym (Pohang Steel Company).

Interestingly there is also a Poscho steel company in Bombay.

The Korean lady is 17-year-old Heo Seo-hyeon but she also goes by Hu Suhyun and Heo Seohyun (and by analogy with other Heos, I expect there is, or will be, also a Ho version out there). Pro since last December. The Hanguk Kiweon seems to be feeding an awful lot of new 1-dans into the system, which seems odd given how hard it is for many of the established pros to maintain a decent living now. Is it all a desperate ploy to match the Chinese youth? With some events being reduced to 20 minutes + 3x20 seconds, I expect the next stage will be 10 seconds a move for pros straight out of Kindergarten. And so on, to vanishing point - literally.

Round 1, Game 2, 2018.02.23 Friday

The word translated to "elegance", 품격, also has the ring of 'dignity' and 'quality' attached. On the 24th of February the club held a type of opening ceremony for the team aiming for a family atmosphere— set up in 2013, the club is meant to be a type of premium for go culture (no cigarettes or gambling...).
They do have sponsors, BC World Pharmaceutical being a major one, but it is more so like a private sponsor in that the company names are not part of the team name. That didn't stop the CEO, Hong Seonghan (http://en.bcwp.co.kr/company/company1) from dropping by and cheering them on.

Yep, it was a typo!

Actually, when white played at K9 it looked like it made sense:

But after black plays some strengthening moves, it looks like it was too aggressive and white ended up being captured instead!

Round 1, Game 3, 2018.02.24 Saturday

0-Buan-v-Seogwipo-3

Heo Seohyun 1p-Cho Seungah 1p

Oh Yujin 5p, despite being born in 1998, is actually the oldest in her team as she is a little older than Fujisawa Rina 3p. Kim Minjeong 1p was born in 2000, and Heo Seohyun 1p was born in 2002.

Kim Kyeongeun 1p, meanwhile, is the youngest in the league at 14 years old. I think I should invest in life insurance.

With some of the strongest players on their team and even Rui Naiwei 9p as a loan player, Chungnam SG Golf is one of the top contenders for the title— making their loss in round one to Inje Skydown somewhat unexpected. Despite that, results such as this can be expected.

Kim Miri 3p qualified for the 2009 Korean Baduk League and even defeated Park Junghwan 9p when he was a 4p. http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/21443
However, her performance in the Women's Korean Baduk League have not been so good, but with this result she has two wins in a row so far this season.

Round 3, Game 2, 2018.03.09 Friday

2-Yeosu-Buan-1

Kim Dayoung 3p-Fujisawa Rina 3p
W+R after 194 moves
http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/72463

Lee Minjin 8p- Oh Yujin 5p
W+R after 260 moves
http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/72464

Lee Sula 4p-Kim Minjeong 1p
W+R after 166 moves
http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/72465

Hoping to end Buan's losing streak, Fujisawa Rina 3p was called to this match playing the day after defending the 30th Female Meijin against Yashiro Kumiko 6p. She faced another title holder born in 1998, Kim Dayoung 3p, who secured the 1st Female Kisung* (Go Saint) against Oh Yujin 5p in December. Kim won along with Yeosu who, having unchanged players since debuting in 2016, continue their winning streak this season despite Buan's move.

*mind there's not a exact main equivalent in Korea.

Round 3, Game 3, 2018.03.10 Saturday

0-Chungnam-v-Seogwipo-3

Choi Jeong 9p-Oh Jeonga 3p
B+R after 213 moves
http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/72502

Kim Sinyoung 1p-Cho Seungah 1p
W+R after 198 moves
http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/72503

Song Hyeryung 2p-Kim Soojin 5p
B+R after 297 moves
http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/72504

Seogwipo shuts out again, against the widely considered strongest team this season. With the clear advantage of having some of the world's strongest female professionals on a team, seven out of nine teams have foreign candidate players. Seogwipo's advantage with Kim Soojin 5p, debuting in the league with this impressive win, employs familiarity with the Korean schedule, avoidance of jetlag and minimisation of fatigue.
