Two players, one male and one female, from Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, North America and Europe.

One player each from South America, Africa, Oceania Asia excluding the aforementioned countries.

Set up a four-round swiss tournament, and it will replicate a single elimination for the winning players complete with a bronze medal game (matched correctly).

Call it the Milky Way Wide Ultimate Go Championships because if there are any sentient or non-sentient beings in the galaxy who play go we will surely invite them.

Two commentating pairs will be based on a jet orbiting earth, assigned to four games each.

Another of my nightmare ideas from 2014/2015.

A win-and-continue tournament of three players each from European, American, and female Taiwanese professionals.

Now mentioning it, I think President Stiassny did imply openness to the idea of a match between the AGA and EGF professionals, but cited travel costs as being an issue. Would this be tried online?

It may be interesting to run a strength-oriented tournament with places for extra players from a combined preliminary.

For example, running the Samsung Cup but combining the female, seniors and world brackets to a single bracket with five places. Hmm, I don't think I can make this topic more insufferable at this point...

I've thought about this for a while, and think it may be more sensible to arrange the four-round swiss tournament as follows:

Two players each, one male and one female,
China, S. Korea, Japan, Taiwan

Two players each,
Rest of Asia, N. America, Europe

One player each,
S. America, Africa&Oceania

The win-and-continue idea between EGF, AGA and female Taiwanese professionals is quite a bit older as it's always made sense to me, but maybe giving a 'one player' handicap of-sorts, the EGF and AGA professionals competing with four players and Taiwanese three, is more even.

Swiss:

1.1 16 player swiss.
1.2 4 Rounds (enough to determine a single winner)

2.1 (3 players (1 Male, 1 Female, 1 Youth) * S. Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan) = 12 players
2.2 (1 player * N.America; Europe; S.America; Asia, Oceania and other territories) = 4 players

From 2035
16 Player single elimination pro tournament.
Alternating between North America and Europe every two years (so it is held in Europe every four years)
NHK/TV Asia Cup time settings

4 China
4 S. Korea
(One Chinese and one Korean player in each bracket)
3 Japan
3 Taiwan
1 Special
1 World

Stage 1: Special preliminary
A tournament combining senior pros, female pros, AGA and North America residing pros and EGF and Europe residing pros.

Some months later...

Stage 2: World amateur preliminary
Similar to the Samsung Cup.

More months later...

Main tournament
Round of 16
Quarter-finals
Semi-finals
Final and third placed match
(The actual games can all be played within two days)

When western go is developed enough so that there are two sponsors (one in each country) that could provide about $50,000/€50,000 for first place every four years, it may be possible.

A tournament to help sort out ratings between players.

First a special preliminary of senior, female and western professionals. Then for the main tournament, Japan sends eight seeds that are each placed in one group. The same is done for Eight qualifiers from the special preliminary. China and Korea each send seven seeds, and Taiwan sends two. From here on copy the Samsung Cup :blackeye:.

The elo of the top four female players fall within Japan's top twenty.

Another thought: respond to the trend towards faster time limits with a tournament that has slower ones each round. The sponsors and viewers can watch rapid games at the start but the pros get four or five hours of main time in the final.

Okay that's enough

Eight groups A to H

8 Japan A-H

4 China A, C, E, G
4 Korea B, D, F, H

2 Chinese Taipei-Taiwan A, H
6 from preliminary of those aged above 44, AGA pros and EGF pros B-G

8 from female preliminary A-H

Then copy the Samsung Cup.
Exiting matches!
Although I'm being funny just doing this often

If another large scale international pro tournament was held in Japan...

First quarter of the year

Preliminaries. Sixteen sixteen-player groups from A to Q each qualify two players from a Swiss with NHK timing.

Four games instead of three, as you want to see which of the qualifiers can top the group...

Groups could be played one after the other over three months.

Second quarter
Round of thirty-two and round of sixteen using short time limits of one hour and one times one minute per move.

Third quarter
Quarterfinals and and Semifinals using long time limits of two hours and two times two minutes per move.

Fourth quarter
Final over two days using marathon limits of three hours and three times three minutes per move.
The first day ends when both players' main time has run out.

----------

Preliminaries
Insei and some amateurs can participate in the qualifying rounds (perhaps making up for any extra spaces left). One could pay pros per game with a bonus (plus fifty percent?) for winning. Each game gets a commentating pair. The preliminaries would act as entry level action-based go game commentary for TV sport audiences.

Main tournament
Instead of pay per game, prize money per round is offered (so amateurs and insei are included, although promoting qualifiers to 5p would mean there's no difference). Eight commentating pairs again.

Qualifying from the preliminaries can get one the prize for round of 32. Winning the final gets one the prize for playing in the 'round of one', the championship prize.

If prizes increase in powers of two, each round has the same total prize money and each player gets additional prize money double to that of the last (for example, if each round offered 32000, all players in the round of thirty-two would get 2000 and the winner would get 32000 + 16000 + 8000 + 4000 + 2000 + 1000 = 59000)

----------

Another thought on pro dan's.

For strength, entering through an open qualifier into the main round of a major domestic tournament could get one to four dan. Entering the best sixteen or so would get one to 6 dan and upon winning one achieves eight dan. International tournaments could be the same plus one.

For experience, achieving together playing X times hundred and winning X times ten games can get one to X dan.

1p-3p can be low dan grades mainly held by new or teaching professionals

4p-6p can be mid dan grades for playing professionals

7p-9p can be high dan grades for top professionals

5p is still pivotal as it comes from qualifying for an international tournament.

Another thing is inversion.

Using longer time limits towards the start and shorter time limits near the end (for special kinds of tournaments).

Rating Tournament

Ch-2 Fm
S.Kr-2 Fm
Tw-2
Jp-2 non big-8 title holders
--------------------
Sub-twelve-hour game
Sib-six-hour game
Sub-three-hour game
sub-one-and-a-half hour game
sub-three-quarters-of-an-hour game

sub-three-hour means each player has one-and-a-half hours for an expected 180 moves.

For professional tournaments, maybe short byo-yomi periods can achieve tight time control. For example:

A sub-three hour game. Each player has one hour and one ten-second per move periods (1h+1x10s)

Or much rather:

A sub three hour game. Each player has 55 minutes and 30 ten-second per move periods. (55m+30x10s)

Ten times 180 equals 30 minutes; the two-to one ratio seems nice.

Pehaps longer time limits are more suited to Olympic-style events and amateur play since it seems professionals with more advanced perception can, in general, do better with less time.
--------------------

Day 1
Preliminary C (Round of 256) and Preliminary B (Round of 128)
Time Limits: Sub 1.5 hour game

months later...

Days 2 and 3
Preliminary A (Round of 64 then Round of 32+32 seeds)
Final preliminary (Round of 32 then Round of 16+16 seeds)
Time Limits: Sub 3 hour game

months later...

Across second half of year

Main Tournament
Octofinals, quarterfinals, semifinals, final and third place match.
Time Limits: Sub 6 hour game

The basis for this tournament is partly comparative and partly from a worry that Iyama 9p's story will happen all over again... Unless an Akiress finds her strength!

A Professional Amateur can be a Pro Assistant...
--------------------
Me and others have thought that instant 9p promotions from winning tournaments while ignoring second place may be a little unbalanced. This basic framework may add back in more of the experience element of pro dan promotions without diluting them.

Two International semifinals-->9p
Two International best 16's--> 8p
Two International best 64's or two National Semifinals-->7p
Two National best 16's--> 6p
Two National best 64's-->5p

The tournament with preliminaries is meant to be an international one...

Another thought; online exchange matches between 1p's from the open qualifications of the five pro go associations and pros from the EGF and AGA (perhaps with some insei as well).

While going on and on about theoretical pro dan promotions, I didn't know the EGF had done something similar on dan promotions .

Names for time according to total match time. Singularity*<- sub-0.5h sub-1h normal, sub-2h(the Cat Returns) sub-4h sub-8h -> Oogway Level. And wondered if the best way to train people for go is to get them to want want to make single, brilliant moves; it would act as a higher goal in a game other than winning, and it may be that players most naturally move to their best way of playing from this point.** It crops up a possible time-limit for training go skill. For example, each player would have 30 minutes main time and then 30 minutes per 45 plays. Passing would add one required play to the opponents time. . .

————————————————————
*the combined mass of creative terms such as dizzy, disnea work, dizzy not work, disney pascal, donald duck, mickey mouse, etc.
condensed into a supermassive black hole. Oddly enough, after some time on zero a similar front appeared.

**Which gets into a whole area of being able to sense a players style (or rather, complex frequency) on sight; oddities that seem true include go and entrepreneurial style are similar and being able to write songs well (amending ability) might make you good at the latter stages of the game.

This is a win-and-continue tournament that might actually be possible:
Title Holder Special All-Star Match

Taiwan: 5 Open title holder or open title league professionals,
Japan: 4 Open title holder or open title league professionals, 1 Female title holder professional
S. Korea: 3 Open title holder or open title league professionals, 2 Female title holder professionals or next best in elo

For logistic reasons, the first two rounds will probably be best each in Korea and Taiwan (like the start of a title match!) with the remaining rounds held in Japan.

It would be like an tri-national GG Auction/Nongshim Cup :).

How about a round robin, where each encounter is a best of three match?

Sorry for taking so long—I think three a side (is that what you mean by best of three?) is already done a bit, and pros could only play with other teams with the same board position. In a win-and-continue, anyone could technically play anyone; in fact, putting weaker players first does the opposite of many-a-side in that it finds who's nearer in level regardless of country. So you could see how top female Korean pros compare to top Japanese pros, and so on.

Your idea is interesting in that it's more efficient to carry out (so makes more sense).

Thanks for your suggestion!

Perhaps something similar makes sense with western pros and over 40 female pros from China. . .

AGA rules (by dual rulests idea I only meant an adjustment for beginners until they become familiar with the game. . . AGA rules are already. . . dual!)

Four years long pro tournament

Semifinals, and Finals and Third place match

League of 8

League of 16

League of 32

League (Swiss) of 64

League (Swiss) of 128

National Single Elimination of 256

National Single Elimination of 512

NSE of 1024

NSE of 2048

Another very different one It's a bit—well, rough around the edges but—

Kr 10, Jp 11, Ch 2 and Ct 1

All China's Players are seeded

All Chinese Taipei's Players are seeded

Japan has five seeds, Korea has four

For Korea and China, the total number of representatives should be equal f/m

Works as a key tournament for rating analysis, perhaps!
