It's over. Europe won. Congrats to the EGF.

Interesting review of the last game at https://online-go.com/review/401958

Nice to see Ilya and EGF winning.

Even in this game Ilya lost two out of his five byo periods due to lag. Having a time disadvantage due to that.
He also finished the game at midnight local time i think?
The EGF pros seem to be at a disadvantage that i hope they fix for next year.

That said, I found the Transatlantic to be an extremely nice tournament to watch with good commenting on Twitch, so i decided to donate a small amount per game.
Hopefully others who enjoyed the tournament will do the same so it can be organised again.

High time to eliminate netlag as a factor in this tournament.

We need some rich go player to rent a villa in the US or western Europe for a few weeks so that it can all be done in person. If there is no such single person, maybe we do a kickstart? I'd be in for a few hundred Euros/dollars every year.

8pm on a weekday makes sense for after work, it's when most of Brit's pandanet European league games are (so 9pm for central European time opponents, if we played Russia we would start earlier to avoid them being late). But on the weekend as these games are there's a lot more flexibility in most people's schedules.

Makes no difference to me. My kids go to bed the same time every day, weekend or not. Some folks may have different schedules, but 8pm is quite a reasonable schedule for me.

Not sure if Ilya has kids or if he cares, which is what would be relevant here, I suppose.

How do you know it was due to lag? Did he say that? Midnight is also not that late to finish a game. I don’t see what the big deal is.

Congrats to the EGF and to Ilja!

I had to leave for an errand at move 126, so I didn't catch all the commentary/analysis, but it seems like both players played a very good game.

People would still complain about some unfairness, I’m sure.

Too many Russians are watching porn at night for this to work. We're either going to have to abolish Russian porn or get the players together in one place.

I know because OGS actually showed him disconnected, but that doesnt stop the clock on OGS. So when he reconnected (the icon in OGS changes) he had a byo period lost, this happened twice, and additonally he was close to loosing several more.
Additionally, he said in his interview that he lost 2 byo periods.

So there can be no confusion or doubt about this.

Regarding the starting time. This is a professional tournament with professional players.
The goal therefor is to make it as even as possible with the best possible mental performance for both players.
It does not matter if you have kids or not, if you have family or not, these are professionals playing, its their job.
Additionally the tournament is organised on a Sunday to make sure theres no work things to skew things for those professionals who have jobs and/or studies on the side.

Just because you want to play at 8-9pm when your kids are asleep does not mean a professional sports tournament should be organised at that time.

You are NOT at peak mental and physical level at midnight. Have you ever seen a single mind sports tournament organised late in the evening or night?
Theres a reason why they are not. Imagine he gets up at 7am - 8am, has to wait 12 hours until playing, while the US players get to wake up, and play at a reasonable hour.

European players have basically been awake for 14-18 hours when the game finishes.

If we just have them download the software, it can be hacked. If we ship hardware with the software pre-loaded, it works better, but still maybe can be hacked.
When you add up all the costs of reliable and absolutely trustworthy client side timing, it may be cheaper just to give the players plane tickets.

Aeroflot is cheap.

And putting them all together in one place eliminates the issue of who is more alert during a certain part of the day.

There are arbiters on-site, aren't there? They can download software and install it for the players to use.
I'm actually half-way into implementing non-server network play in q5go. It probably won't be suitable for this kind of event for a while, but in principle dedicated software would be the best solution IMO.

Pick some place in between so that jet lag is roughly equal. ( It should be a little closer to the cluster of US players than to the Europeans. As a general rule of thumb, it is easier to recover from traveling westward than eastward. We seem to be more capable of staying up late than of getting up early. Seasoned travelers report, on the average, that it takes eastbound travelers about 1.5 times as long for westbound travelers to recover )

Iceland looks about right. It is reputed to be very pleasant in the summer.

Or we can just give them all a week's vacation in the eastern US or western Europe before they start playing.
