Power outage. I did my 10 problems, but since I should resize them, I’ll upload when the power is back on.

And for tomorrow... I’ll do 10 problems.

Problems from yesterday:

6/10 completely correct, two I'll give myself half credit for.

That being said, I still have no power. Looks like I'm not the only one: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/ ... 334409002/

This is the only time in my life that I remember the power being out for more than a few hours. It's crazy.

I went to the store this morning to buy a generator. I'm using an extension cord from that right now. An electrician is coming over to setup a box outside so we can use the generator to power the entire house. Until then, we have no water.

I can't believe I'm living in the 21st century...

Welcome to global warming.

Hang in there.

Wow that stinks. In 2012 a derecho came through (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_2012 ... an_derecho) and we lost power for four days. The weather was over 90 degrees if I'm not mistaken, and consequently there was a run on ice. We had water, however, and I don't understand why you guys don't. You probably know this, but the generator can be dangerous (carbon monoxide) if kept too close to the house.

Anyway, glad your priorities still involve solving go problems. :-)

Interesting story, Mike. Good point about the carbon monoxide. I read a bit about it and the generator is outside, but it IS close to the house. I should move it..

Our water is out because the well pump needs electricity.

A little sloppy today, but here are 10 problems I did. Getting late, so maybe I rushed too much:

Overall, 6/10. I should take my time on these more to make sure I do 10/10, though that'll require more time on the problems than I'm spending now.

Eventually I wanna do that, I think, but I'm taking baby steps.

Some more problems... This time, I just grabbed some from tasuki tsumego. The benefit of that site is that I don't have to compile a page of 10 problems myself.

So I haven't been playing many games of go. Just doing these problems, lately. But today was the new month for the AYD. I had a mediocre result last month, so I ended up just staying in the same league section.

Last game I played, I said that I felt pretty frustrated when I finished. I think I topped that this game. You can take a look at my blunder at the end of the game:

Again, very frustrating.

I guess I'm not so frustrated to give a brief review this time, though. I guess I'm getting used to losing.

It was my turn as white, and I didn't really know where to play. My thoughts were:
* The bottom seems big because both black and white contend for influence there. So maybe I could play 'a'.
* The top right seems big, because I can prevent his enclosure. The "proper" way for this shape, I seemed to recall, was 'b'.
* I could play 'c', because the right side seems wide. But I was afraid of this variation:

Black's move at :b4: seems to enhance his bottom right enclosure.

* And then in this situation, both the bottom right and top right were "approachable", so perhaps I could split the right:

I spent a good amount of time on just this move, and in the end:
1.) I ruled out the side moves because, I thought, "bots like corners more than sides"
2.) The move at 'b' seemed better than the move at 'c', because of the kicking variation, and how the subsequent pincer aids the bottom right formation.

I looked at this position briefly with KataGo - didn't let it do many playouts, but it preferred to play on the bottom right, per my initial instinct... I guess bots *do* like the side sometimes. Furthermore, it liked 'c' better than 'b'. I suppose it's since the right is so open.

For the last part of my review, I'll just leave this diagram:

Yes. I was surprised when I looked at 19th century games with the Elf commentaries, which I had avoided doing because they were no komi games. I did not find that Elf's strongly disagreed with plays on the sides, although it did not like early pincers and extensions. I think that is because 4-4 openings were rare in the 19th century. IOW, having at least two stones in each corner was enough to promote plays on the side. That is the case in the diagram position you thought so much about. :)

I played against Blackie from BIBA today, with a 5 stone handicap. I lost. Here's the game, with some of the variations he included in the review:

Blackie's summary was that the opening was pretty good, but my ko threat was bad, and the subsequent ponnuki I gave was bad, and suddenly, white was back in the game. I hallucinated at the end, and ended up resigning.

We had done a kind of a bet before the game that the loser would do 1 pushup per point that they lost, and post the video online. If one side resigned, they'd have to do 75 pushups. I didn't really think about it during the game, but I resigned. So I'll be doing 75 pushups, I guess.

Looking at his OGS account, it seems that Blackie will have to do 8 pushups, as he lost against 2 handicap stones and 25 points reverse komi.

Doing a few pushups every day is certainly a good way to maintain your physical condition, but 75 pushups is hard...

It was harder than I thought, and my form started getting worse and worse. Near the end, I was barely moving my body down. I really wanted to get 75 in a row on video, but I had some issues. Here’s how it went:

* First attempt: 61 pushups. You can see at the beginning of the video.
* Second attempt: 50 pushups - a little more tired, realized I wasn’t recording.
* Third attempt: Waited a little while, then did all 75 pushups! But then I saw the phone recording storage was full, and it only recorded about 70. Ugh.
* Fourth attempt: I used my laptop to do the recording to avoid running out of storage. My form was getting weak - I’m not going down as much as I’d like. But I think I finally got the full 75 recorded. But then I watched the video, and only saw 74….
* Fifth attempt: Tried for 75 again, but got to about 43, and stopped.

I kept getting weaker and weaker, and my form got worse and worse. So I'm going to try again in a couple of days. Technically, Blackie didn't say I had to do 75 *in a row*, but I wanted to to prove that I could do it. Technically, I did, but it doesn't seem satisfying :-S

Here are a few clips of my attempts from yesterday:

I didn't think about the pushup aspect that much when I resigned... I should have just aimed to lose by 10 points or so.

Hey you are cheating, your chest stays far above the ground.

But I can't do better. My maximum is 30 in a row.

Yeah, the more I did, the higher my chest got :-D

Personally, I think the first ones in the video are OK - I don't think it's necessary to touch your chest to the ground. But as I kept getting more tired, I was barely going down at all. I like to aim for about 90 degree angle with my elbows, but those angles started getting more and more obtuse ;-)

Haha - I take no offense to critique on my pushup form. I'm not aspiring to be a body builder, or even to do pushups in the longterm. I'm OK with having form that's a little off. It's just kind of a fun bet that I made with Blackie - and also something I'm doing on Facebook.

It's been awhile since I played on Fox, and I started again today - inspired by Uberdude' gospel.

I tried to just think about the gospel stuff in the opening. It was the theme of this game. Here it is, with some comments:

My overall feeling - when I tried to just follow gospel, it felt like I got to the endgame quickly. Nothing all that exciting happened - no groups of mine were in serious danger. I did have a little bit of a skirmish in the middle where I had a minor setback, I think. But overall, it was like I just took some of the big points, moved to endgame, and game was over.

Hard to describe, but it didn't feel like a normal game to me. I'll see what KataGo thinks, now.
