Welcome back Kirby!

Unfortunately, now that you have started thinking about your streak enough to post it here, you have stopped "not caring". I predict that your streak will end now. But no worries! You can post about the end of your streak too. I'll look forward to it. ;-)

Kind of. I mainly posted here, because I wanted to post before my streak ended, and I thought it was an interesting phenomenon: when I don't think much in the opening, it seems to serve me well.

I suppose the observation of this is a form of "caring", but when I play next Tuesday, I plan to continue to "not care" during the opening (i.e. minimal thinking time).

Who knows? Haha.

Welcome back Brian. I think your new attitude is healthy. And evidence that for many of us, pressure is just an artificial thing we carry around to our own detriment.

I just ran across this :)

When an archer is shooting for fun
He has all his skill.

If he shoots for a brass buckle
He is already nervous.

If he shoots for a prize of gold
He goes blind

Or sees two targets –
He is out of his mind.

His skill has not changed,
But the prize divides him.

He cares
He thinks more of winning
Than of shooting –
And the need to win
Drains him of power.

AYD day, again. Almost screwed this up - the top left incited an emotional reaction :-S

This week is an anomaly, because there's a game this Saturday. So I'll play again, then.

AYD Saturday game:

Not caring seems to be working alright. But it's getting harder not to care :-p

My streak ended.

Here's the game:

I've been aiming for being casual/not caring. But I think I went a little overboard when I didn't read the top that well, and got captured early. It was an uphill battle after that.

How do I feel?

I guess I feel disappointed. It's nice to have a winning streak. I don't feel a lot of pain, per se. Maybe a feeling that goes along with the phrase, "Aw, that's too bad..."

Oh well. Back to work tomorrow. The good thing is, from Friday, I'm taking a vacation for about a week. I won't do work during that time. Probably no go, either. But maybe I can relax a little bit.

I thought I'd post here. It's been awhile.

I haven't been studying go. That's mostly due to some reflection that I had over the past year. Since March 2020, I have been working from home. Skipping the commute, this gives me lots of extra control over my time, which I didn't have before. However, if I think back about the past year, while I had spurts of studying this and that (go, Korean, coursera courses, even some Chinese), I didn't make significant progress in any one area - I just learned bits in pieces in many areas.

So I decided to try to focus on just a single thing at a time. For now, that's Korean. I already know a lot of Korean, but I'd like to actually take the TOPIK test in the fall. It'll be a measuring stick for my current ability.

Oh yeah... Speaking of measuring sticks, I was curious the other day, so I wrote a small python script to grab all of the ratings from the AGA ratings website.

Basically, as it currently stands, my AGA rating puts me somewhere around the 80~85 percentile (last in-person tournament I participated in isn't reflected, I think). That figure isn't exact, but it just gives me an idea of where I stand in the tournament-playing community. I'd like to improve that overall percentile - it'd be cool to be above the 90th percentile, for example.

But I have no real metric for where I'm at in Korean, so let's do that first.

All that single-focus mumbo jumbo being said, I'm still in the AYD. I don't go to the lectures, and don't listen to the reviews. But I play a game once a week.

Somehow, I'm in the A1 group right now, but I've lost the first two games. I expected to lose the first two, given my opponents. However, today's game, it seemed like I had a chance - running the game through KataGo seemed to corroborate this. According to KataGo, it was somewhat even, I fell behind, then I got really far ahead... And then I blundered and totally fell behind. Nonetheless, I'm happy I seemed to have a chance against this guy. He's usually totally beating me.

Here's the game:

Here's the game.
