Seeking info on two very old Go servers

Post by bugcat »

Just now, I ran across the initials GIGS and NCIC on a program I reckon hasn't been updated since the 90s. They're listed as servers. Does anyone know anything about them?

Never heard of them, however maybe the following links help to confirm their existence:

An Italian 1998 beginner's guide about Go on the internet, http://figg.org/old_figg/www.figg.org/i ... 70-it.html, mentions telnetting to blue.ncic.ac.cn, and when I search for that domain it seems to have been a bulletin board of some kind. (Maybe the guide also exists in English somewhere?)

The British Go association Go server history page https://www.britgo.org/history/servers.html mentions GIGS as a German server.

NCIS was a competitor to Internet Go Server some in the 1990's. As I recall it came to be due to some animosity towards the founder of IGS. People on IGS could get banned from IGS for soliciting players on IGS.

Edit: So much for my memory. After looking at the British Go page linked above it now seems I was confusing NCIC with NNGS. Sorry>
