G'day.

This is a thread for Australians who play go online to come out of the woodwork and introduce themselves.

I learnt the game from Andrew Lewis at Griffith University in Brisbane. The best part of a decade later, I've worked my way up to a reliable fifth kyu, and can be found most Tuesday evenings at the Brisbane Go Club, nursing a cup of herbal tea and a biscuit. The rest of the week I play on KGS and OGS.

Recently I've been debugging the Australian Go Association; progress is slow, and new bug reports are more than welcome. Turning up to some of the national tournaments in other states has been worth the effort, though.

Who are you? Where do you play? What do you want?

That's a shame. You have a real strong Go teacher over there in Sydney.

Well, go put yourself up on igolocal.net and then make the trek into the Young Go Academy.

hey guys... nice to see some people playing here in australia!

I'm in the sydney region... can you tell me more about this young go academy? Would a beginner like myself find anything useful there?

I hope this post helps.

Venue details can be found in the link provided -- a flyer for a tournament starting this weekend!
http://www.australiango.asn.au/files/To ... -flyer.pdf
A thread for the tournament: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=1628

On the Australian Go Association site it is suggested that the club is open from 2pm-10pm every day. I think the sign on the door had been changed to 10am-10pm when I was last there. Maybe someone can confirm?...

It is a great venue with many nice people. On my visits most other players were strong dans. It's $10 per visit but you've got access to many strong players, a collection of books, and a very well organised room of quality sets and comfortable seating.

Fridays are a great way to start your visits because An Younggil 8p gives a lecture (usually starting around 7pm). He always encourages players to bring in records of their own games for review, otherwise reviews recent pro games. (At least that's been the case in the short time I've been going.)

Teaching day: Friday 26th November from 2pm. Lectures by professionals, simultaneous games with reviews.
Professional players attending: Aoki Shin’ichi 9p from the Nihon Ki-in, Ji-Sung Kang 8p and
Hyun-Sub Kim 2p from Korea, and An Younggil 8p and Kyung-Min Yu 6p from the Young Go Academy.

I might be available to meet players at the Young Go Academy if they want an SDK opponent. (I've been estimated around 1d-2k Australian, however that translates to other ranks.)

hey thanks for responding. It was helpful. In your opinion, would a beginner like me realistically gain anything from going though?

Yes. People of your level to play with, and people of greater strength to tell you what you just misplayed.

I'm in Melbourne and I occasionally play at the Victorian Go Club.
