Translated game commentaries

Post by bitzi »

Hello all,

I have started to translate commented professional games from chinese resources, until now from Tygem broadcasts, into english. Altough those comments are often a bit scarce, I think they are still very helpful for understanding and enjoying the games. And it's much better than to have no comments at all.

If you have any suggestions about the content or anything else, please tell me

Btw, I have a problem with the java applet on weiqi.sports.tom.com (some characters are correct some are not). If anyone can help me with it, I could use also translate some games from there.

Assuming the text is Simplified Chinese, you can add the 'CA[gb2312]' tag into the sgf, and that should fix it for most sgf readers

see this thread for more details:
http://www.godiscussions.com/forum/show ... php?t=7285

for example:

Code: Select all

(;
CA[gb2312]
TE[首届智运会围棋女子个人赛第2轮]

RE[黑超时胜]
PB[黑嘉嘉 初段]
BR[]
PW[夏介丽 5段]
WR[]

C[黑超时胜(现场消息)]

Thank you very much for putting in the effort for translating. It is much appreciated. Also, nice site. If you ever come across a discussion on L19 of a certain pro game that you have translated professional comments for, be sure to post it on this board, I'm sure a lot of people here will find that very interesting.

I hate to be a negative nancy, but I'm slowly becoming more sensitive to these things. Have you talked to the original commentators/tygem about translating or reproducing their comments for other audiences?

No I have not. Since those comments are freely available for anyone anyway and I'm clearly stating from where it comes, I see no reason for a problem.

Seems like a gray area, though I agree that it's hard to see the specific harm.

If I post a pdf of my book on the internet, I maintain the copyright, even though I have to know it will be copied.

Cool site, and I like the commentaries.

Would love to see you at Beijing go club again sometime soon. There are lots of people there working on their Chinese and their weiqi!

When you use the small version instead of the full version of Eidogo, I find it quite fiddly to have to do so much scrolling on the small windows to read the longer commentaries and to find the variations. It would be very nice if you would use a larger format or make it possible to download the files.

In any case, I found the commentaries quite interesting and your English is perfectly readable. Thanks for sharing your work!

Thanks for your suggestions :)
There is a download link for the SGF just under the Eidogo script (right click save as). Maybe I should make it more clear.

I feel the same way about Eidogo, but unfortunately the full version is quite wide and most WordPress themes don't like it (or if they do, they don't look as I would like). If I have the time I might look for a better theme to support the full Eidogo.

Nice site bitzi!

I've added a link to it on Go Game Guru: http://gogameguru.com/links/ - let me know if you want me to write anything else there.

I enjoyed the commentary of the recent Iyama Yuta - Lee Changho game. It's also nice (for me at least) to see that what the pro said confirmed what I'd already told our readers in a discussion... :-?

When more people are awake (right now most of the western world is asleep) I'll add one of your game commentaries to our scoop.it page and see if we can send some more readers your way. You might also contact Chris Ball at Planet Go if you don't mind your feed being syndicated on that site.

Regarding EidoGo, we've had the same problem. We'd love to show all commentaries in full width, but it's too wide for our site. Maybe if monitors keep getting bigger... ;-)
