Why we've opened a Go book shop...

Post by gogameguru »

We've just opened a new Go book shop. If you want to buy Go books, why not give us a go?

We're very excited about this. If you'd like to know more about what we're up to, I wrote on our site about why we're opening a go book shop.

Please let me know what you think :).

Edit: I forgot to say, the Go books in the photo are mine, but I'm sure there are people here with more impressive collections :). If anyone would like to share a photo of their Go books, I'd love to see it! (Tchan, TMark and John F - I'm sure you have good ones...)

Off-topic :

Two things bothers me a lot when I see the picture on the top of the pages of your site :

- there's a black stone clearly thinner than others

- your white stones seems transparent. Is it the case ?

You can see a lot of my Asian go books on my blog. I don't really show off the English language one, cause lots of other people have them and have already written about them.

@Tryphon, the stones in the photo are agate. Yes, some of the white stones are quite translucent and no two stones are the same. They all have various different mineral deposits. Some of the stones are cloudy and some have colourful spots. KirkMc didn't like them either, but I do. Even though I have others, I use these stones most days.

@tchan, do you have a photo on your blog that shows all your books, so we can get an idea of the size of your collection?

Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the collection. When you have a LOT of books and it feels like urban sprawl, it's difficult to photograph the whole collection together. Let's say I definitely have over 1500 go books of various languages.

I didn't say I didn't like them. They surprised me, that's all. Actually, I'd like see the photo with colors. Are Black stones made in agate too ?

Hm, the agate stones in the picture do not all seem to have the same thickness for their respective colors. Some seem flatter than others.

Indeed, that's what I'm saying. They're not all the same. I believe agate is quite brittle (though I've never broken or chipped any) and not the easiest material to work with. Also, you can buy higher quality agate stones than these. These ones were a gift from a friend. I like them and I don't need better ones.

Another friend of mine has a spectacular set with more striations and more uniform stone size. Those are very expensive though, even in China.

Do you guys think the photo is distracting?

By the way, while we're talking about that picture... nobody has ever correctly guessed the pro game in the picture, though it shouldn't be that hard... There are some very nice tesuji by another friend in that picture... ;)
