Pretty much says it all in the header, really. Just follow the link below and look for the NewInGo page.

Best wishes.

The article mentions that the magazine is edited by Iwamoto Mariko. Is she any relation to Iwamoto Kaoru?

did they publish the recipe? -- my Japanese is rusty (if not altogether non-existent)

There's a block titled "How to make" for the cookies, but I don't know most of the ingredient names used ><

I'd have to partner with a dictionary and hope for the best, so if you can get anyone else who is better at Japanese, you'll probably get more reliable results.

If you'd said goban I definitely wouldn't have answered. Since you said cookies instead of biscuits I had to spin a coin, but it came up right, so here's the recipe (at your own risk).

To make two 4x4 boards plus 32 black and white stones

Salt-free butter 90g
Sugar 50g
Eggs 1/2
One chocolate pen
A = Weak (i.e. low-gluten) flour 150g + Almond poudre 35g
Cocoa powder (black)* 2 small spoonsful

*If not available, ordinary cocoa OK

(1) Using a spatula, mix the butter softened at room temperature until it turns whitish, then mix in the sugar and beaten egg(s). Add sieved A and mix till firm.

(2) Divide the dough into three. Mix the cocoa powder into one portion. Wrap all the portions in clingfilm and leave to rest for 30 minutes in a fridge.

(3) THE 4x4 BOARD: Roll out one of the white dough portions to a thickness of 3mm, and cut into two 6x6cm squares.
GO STONES: Divide the remaining white portion of the dough and the black portion into 32 equal pieces and mould gently into round shapes.

(4) Put all spaced apart on a metal tray covered with aluminium foil and bake for 10 to 15 minutes in an oven pre-heated to 180 deg. C.

(5) Using the chocolate pen, draw 4 vertical and 4 horizontal lines on the board cookie (see photo at right) and emboss the intersections with a round point.

As a cook who knows little beyond how to pour the cornflakes out, I was puzzled by "one or two eggs" - seems a wide range and I thought it was a health option, but my wife tells me it's pretty standard stuff as eggs come in various sizes, so it's one large or two small.

It occurred to me that L19ers might arrange to have a worldwide cookathon at the weekend, and compare results (via photos). There are two serious sides to this. One is that these biccies can be used in publicity events. The other, closely related, is that 4x4 go is a serious topic promoted by Cho U and wife Kobayashi Izumi (and baby Kosumi). There have been several articles on it in Gekkan Go World recently, and one in a recent English Go World. It's more of a puzzle than a game perhaps, but it seems like a great way to introduce go to newcomers, especially children, and if it's done with these edible pieces, winners can be allowed to eat their prisoners.

Facepalm. I just translated the recipe, and that's when you don't want to see the warning that somebody has posted in this topic, and I "might want to revise my post in light of this". Can't contend with the master. John 1 - Hush 0. ^^

Aha. I was wondering why the small lettering on that page said "Tsumego contributed by: Cho U Kisei"

Is "Igo Men" a play on "Ikemen"? This magazine is pretty funny.

The first puzzle being, how has White managed to play 5 stones to Black's 2, without there being any possible place to have captured the extra stones?

Best wishes.

You like to make sure your 4x4 tsumego match situations you'd see in a real game, TMark?

On a full-sized board, the number of stones in a local area won't matter, but it just seemed strange (apart from all the plays on the first line) to have a 4x4 board like that. I expect they all have that feature.

Best wishes.

For those with an interest in the matter, you can find 10 more 4x4 problems on the Drago homepage, here: http://www.godrago.net/Export/gp4x4.pdf
