narrow loss

Post by Orochi »

I was black. Apart from the probably unnecessary 183, the wtf-move 209 and some smaller similar mistakes, my game seemed okayish to me, so I'm asking for a few pointers on how to improve it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. =)

I'll just comment a few moves in the middle game. I have to say, the flow of your moves was pretty good for "just" 17k, congratulations! You moved from side to side very well.

Move 91: Check the ladder to the other side ;)
Move 111: No need to save these stones: they serve no purpose, worth only 4 points. A move in the lower-right quadrant is much, much bigger.
Move 115: This seems greedy. You didn't want to let white any territory? Better you play to get a huge corner in the bottom right, and then poke into his center. His hane afterwards is very painful!

Just a few comments. Keep up the good work, and join the Advanced Study Room league as soon as you can ;)

Welcome to the forum.

Your first several moves look fine for 17K. ( Your first four could be played by a pro. )

15: No need to play so defensively. Ok, I know you've probably gotten a few of your groups killed in recent games, but you're almost certainly alive here.
If you really want to ensure the life of your group, try E6. It means that you can run if you need to. It also neutralizes his stone at E8.

21: Generally, contact moves on a open board don't accomplish much for you. Look at K6 here. Notice how it starts to buikd a large area in the kower right.

25: Good!

33: Again, you're thinking very defensively. The first person to hane at N5 or N6 gains an advantage there.

79-95: Good sequence! There could be minor improvements, but the general idea is very good.

Overall, you're playing well for a 17K. Try not to focus so much on huddling against the side for life so soon. Venture out into the middle a bit more. And think more about attacking.
