I remember him mainly as the 'evil antagonist' of Akaboshi Intetsu in the famous "Blood-vomitting Game". Well, perhaps not so much evil as ambitious. And uhm, one of the best go players of all time of course.
All your base are belong to Google:

Others have already answered this one, but when I'm telling the story to people I'm trying to get interested in Go, I describe Jowa to them with: "not only did he beat the guy who challenged his right to the title Meijin, but beat him
so badly the guy died from it!!"
Then in response to their wide-eyed astonishment, I explain that people nowadays are pretty sure Intetsu had tuberculosis, but it's still a great story - especially with the bit about Jowa being shown moves by the ghosts of his ancestors while he was in a fever-dream.

Was Jowa actually mean/rude/evil/whatever? Between the suspicion of political intrigue at his appointment to office and, of course, the death of his opponent as a postscript to the Blood-Vomiting Game, we're sort of preconditioned to think of him as the villain of the story. But the problem with that view is that the story wasn't fiction - it's literally what happened.
He was (by the rules of the time) cleared of the accusation of being wrongfully appointed Meijin (in a most dramatic manner!) and obviously Akaboshi's illness can't really be blamed on Jowa.
Does anyone know anything about his actual personality and habits? Was he really a kind-hearted soul who taught Go at the local orphanage and adopted stray kittens?
P.S. Go Seigen, Takagawa Kaku, and Gu Lingyi rate among my faves. I also can't ever resist looking at a game by Lee Sedol (and Jowa too, but don't have enough examples in my personal database) but those are usually less about flow and more in the nature of watching an earthquake or tsunami - a powerful force of nature, in whose path something *big* is about to be destroyed.
