I've ascended a Nethack wizard, and I've got an Angband dwarf priest on dungeon level 88 now, which is my best result so far.Chew Terr wrote:Let's see how off-topic off-topic can go. I was surprised to just how many technical people there were in the GD poll, so I got to wondering what other technical/geeky hobbies we share. Does anybody else here play roguelikes?

Re: Roguelikes
Hehe, awesome. I've got a winner on Angband - 2.4.frog-knows, and 3.0.3 (First was a High-Elf Mage, second a High-Elf Ranger), and am an inactive maintainer of the variant Posband.
Never got that far on nethack, fun though it is
I stopped following roguelikes when angband.oook.cz lost the usenet web portal to rec.games.roguelike.angband.
Happy days!

Re: Roguelikes
when i was a highschool senior i play arcade games everyday.
i held world record on "stargate" or other name "defender II"
i played 14 hours straight and they kick me out to close the place.
i got my quarter back
there are few games i can play long as i wanted.
"centipede" "tron" "qubert" and few more.

Re: Roguelikes
Heh, I've never managed to do very well with wizards, which made me sad, since by all rights, they SHOULD be easy. They start with great items, have a great quest artifact, and get magicbane guaranteed. But you can't quit now, you haven't even ascended a priest (My favorite).tealeaf wrote:YAFAP.
After ten years playing Nethack on and off, mostly off, I had my first ascension about a week ago as a female human wizard.

Re: Roguelikes
Always had so many friends play(ing) these games, especially Nethack. Just never gave any of them a try. Guess I've always been playing other games, or had other stuff going on. Here's to the enormous stack of games I've purchased, (maybe) installed, and never played.

Re: Roguelikes
Ascending even with an easy class like a Valk is at least SDK level in NetHack. If you managed it without reading spoilers, it's easily dan level.

Ascending unspoiled is truly impressive. Has anyone ever managed it? I most certainly did not, in any case.fwiffo wrote:If you managed it without reading spoilers, it's easily dan level.

Re: Roguelikes
That's kind of like a random selection algorithm beating a pro. It's <TECHNICALLY> possible. But until it happens, it's just monkeys and Shakespeare.

Re: Roguelikes
I still say Nethack is the best computer game ever. Can't think of any other computer game that I've played as long and keep coming back to. Lately though I've been getting up where I think I'm good for the endgame run but then Rodney just kicks me up one side and down the other. Think I need to focus on more firepower and not just survivability (GDSM, AoR, -XX AC, etc.) so I can take him down quickly.

Re: Roguelikes
Thanks. New avatar and all!
Have you tried Hearse? It lets you trade bones files for extra fun and random surprises in your dungeons. I started playing on a university server so you never knew what you were going to find on a given level
spoiler: and it brings back some of that fun instead of "Oh, that was Rothebait with the 6 potions of extra-healing. I remember that!".
