Ichiriki eventually managed to kill a fairly large group, but as the surrounding stones were cut FineArt snipped of a tail and consolidated the rest of the board into territory and won (plus had semedori). Maybe bottom right shimari was too slow, the outside attachment ended up so effective. I expect if it were a 4-4 (so adding move seen as less important) then white would have started actions on the left side moyo (say a pincer). Humans also seem content with defending the bottom left corner at 2-4 but bots seem to think it's slow and I'm minded to agree seeing how this game went. This "you kill them but get squeezed so much you loose" result seems to happen a lot with bots, probably because they don't get sad from being killed. (Humans do sometimes manage it too of course, e.g. http://gobase.org/replay/?gam=/games/ja ... f&off=null)

First time I looked at this game I thought black destroyed white but only now I noticed white actually killed that large black group. This makes it even more amazing because black still won.
I can't imagine a player who would sacrifice so much and still win.

It does happen, for example that Sakata game at gobase I linked the wall he sacrifices (to get thickness in sente and kill a bigger group) is only a little smaller than FineArt's (11 stones and not as many dame). Or there was this game from Lee Sedol vs Kong Jie in which Lee blundered (rather than sacrificed) and a (larger than FineArt's) group died with little compensation, but he played on like a man possessed and engineered an amazing kill and comeback to win from what was probably 50+ points behind!Krama wrote:I can't imagine a player who would sacrifice so much and still win.
Or there was that famous game from Luo Xihe vs Choi Cheolhan in which Luo gave up a triple ko and let a huge group die but won after the exchange. Mr Go Commentary did a video on it: http://www.gocommentary.com/free-videos ... olhan.html
Or of course the even more famous old 'killing gane' from Shusai and Karigane. Shusai killed and won that game but iirc had Karigane played better on the outside it could have been a masterful sacrifice rather similar to the FineArt game. dhu posted a Chinese review here.

And then there is this classic.
