If OGS only had the same stone/board set as KGS, I'd feel much more comfortable playing there.

Having choices is always a good thing(even if I probably won't be using them)

I actually switched to this after doing a lot of go problems repeatedly. I don't think the textured stones are ugly. I just don't think they look anywhere near real enough to justify my eyes getting used to them. I'd rather use untextured so that when I go back and forth from go problems to playing on KGS, at least some part of my reading(or lack of reading) will follow through.

You are not alone. I agree with you 100%. I do the same only because the untextured set is LESS UGLY.
And I know other people who do the same.

The Android client's new wooden bowls & lids and shell & slate stones (at the bottom) look nice.
We can only hope one day WMS will add nice shell & slates stones to the standard client. :|

I think that it is technically possible to make a set on OGS with the KGS stone/board graphics. wms would have to give permission for it first, though.
Have you tried mixing and matching the stones and board graphics that exist? I use the Cel stones and the Beaten Wood board. :)

Yes, I have tried that. Currently I use these settings:

Global style: Magnolia
background: OGS Original Background
stones: Simple Stones (Big)

I'm a fan of simplicity: no texture, stones that are really black and white, and the board should have a warm color and a maximal contrast to both, black and white stones

Global style is fine: A light but not glaring background with warm colors.
background: Best color: (RGB)=(221,136,34); the original background is the best compromise, but a bit too light.
stones: These are the biggest problem. There are no really back and white stones, except for the "Simple Stones (big)", but the white stones have a really ugly thick black edge :(

You should try adding what you want. It's real simple on OGS. For example, I just added above mentioned color, looks rather good (Named Sienna). As for the stones, it a bit harder since you need a lot of pictures for different sizes, but still nothing stops you from fixing things your way.

I find Magnolia too light. I use SakuyaAkira's Shadows.

As for the stones, I was Gimping for a bit, but I can't remove the border in a way that still looks good.

Yeah, I have added the background "Ochre" which looks fine, but the stones seem to be a bit more complicated since obviously transparency and antialiasing is needed which requires semitransparency.

Yep, I tried editing the simple stones set a bit, and my basic gimp skills are not good enough.

Being able to use custom textures would be great, but I'd put some other features (such as showing game list and chat in different colors) or be able to refresh connection (mine is very bad) ahead of this.

I have created a stone set with GIMP now including alpha-transparency/antialiasing. They look nice, but unfortunately, they cannot be uploaded. The error message says, that either a file is missing, is not in png format or exceeds a 4k-ish size. Actually all 60 stones are entered in the upload text field, they are all in png format, and the size of the largest file is just 774 bytes.

Sigh.
