There's a ladder you gave up on.

I feel like the biggest fool.
These are all the ideas/variations I've run the last 15 minutes.

One of your variations has a ladder that works, but you need to start from the right direction.

I admire your diligence. :D

Sometimes there is more than one way to play atari.

If you want a hint, there is the move number in the spoiler below :
43 give up the ladder : can you find the right move?

Ooooooh. Now I see it

Funny thing, before I looked at your post, I thought I had found it. I came up with this variation. Though apparently it's not it :-? I think it doesn't work if :w46: just plays S18

Thanks everyone for helping me find it. Too bad I couldn't find it on my own entirely, but that'll come as I improve :) I did find many other variations so the exercise in itself was very valuable!

Question, though: was the netting much worse than catching the stones in a ladder?

You see how :w32: was not a good move?

Yes, the ladder would then not have worked, because a big group of black would be in atari running out the ladder.
Though netting still would've worked in that case :)

Thanks for (not) pointing it out to me :D

Yes, it is a negative example of the general principle to avoid strengthening the opponent's stones.

That's a liberal interpretation of working. ;) When the ladder does not work, instead of playing atari against the cut, simply extending along the second line may be best.

Thank you for your stick-to-it-ivity. :D
