My Windows 7 came with something called "Microsoft SilverLight" which I double clicked at some point, and it told me that Microsoft silverlight was great and as an example of how great it was, tried to teach me Chinese. Weird, but true.
Wait, I was confused with the ASUS VIBE Fun Centre (powered by Microsoft Silverlight), and also only the first lesson was free.

Re: Chinese
I too love the ChinesePod course, but when looking for free resources be aware of the public domain American Foreign Service Institute lessons

Aside from the usual books, I'd suggest using your local library to get your hands on some Pimsleur and/or Rosetta Stone if possible until you get up to speed for more advanced resources.
You'll also want to frequently look things up in a Chinese/English dictionary, but whether it's online or in book form is up to you.
Slow chinese is an amazing website. Just checked out the site, and it sells pdf documents with pin yin for 80 cents but the audio files are free.
Unfortunately for me, I read traditional chinese, but the conversational chinese aspect about the language is still very valuable.
