Oh.

So although there is no limit to the number of simultaneous turn-based games one could play on KGS without being marked an escaper, not only is escaping entirely unpunished, but in order for a rated game to count, games have to be played at the pace of about two moves per day to finish before six months is up simply because games are removed from the server based on when they start instead of when they end. Not criticizing, but was the no time limit feature an afterthought? Is there going to be more work on getting it to work well as turn-based, as I assume it was partially intended? KGS is great, don't get me wrong. It's great that you have the time to be attentive to these forums.

I don't suppose it would be too difficult to continue the game if 6 months have elapsed. Just start a new game when you and your opponent are on and quickly replay to the position before deletion.

Yeah, that's another downside of KGS. You can't accept a challenge unless your opponent is online...

Well, KGS isn't meant to be a turn-based server so you can't count that as a fault. You might be interested in trying OGS if you have not already registered there.

KGS-New New Zealand Rules come the closest to my ideal ruleset, and its popularity and hence activity is second only to IGS. There is no other server for me.

Not IGS, OGS (
http://online-go.com). Anyway, you usually don't want to play area scoring (like NZ) for turn-based games as it'll add days to completing a game due to dame filling.

OGS is not the most active server; IGS is. I don't care how long a game lasts as long as it counts towards rank and escaping is handled - simultaneous games means little wait.

(hopefully...)

wms, the limitations of turn-based games I've outlined in this thread is one reason why I haven't really gotten into online Go at all yet. Just curious, how long before KGS doesn't have these limitations?

Out of interest, why don't you want to play your turned based Go games on a turn based Go server?

1. Significantly less active than KGS equals more wait for a game and/or smaller chance of finding someone my rank.
2. Nothing close to NZ rules is on any server. I would hate playing with rules I feel are completely unjustified (read: feel stupid).

You mean the "6 months to finish a game"? I have no plans at this time to change that. So very slow turn-based games do not work well on KGS.

1. It doesn't seem hard to find games on turn based servers.
2. Why don't you just try playing? The rules rarely come up as an issue. Many people will play hundreds of games and never see one bit of change caused by rules other than whether to fill in dame or not. In person, you always just do it anyway.

Thanks to wms's post above, I guess I hate all Go servers now and will be forced to. I thought the "no time limit" was useful for at least a pathetic something, but free games only (if used for turn-based) and escapers welcome (either way), apparently. Goodbye, KGS.
Unless it's actually realistic to expect an opponent to play two moves most days on KGS when the other player isn't online at the same time? I don't really know what to expect if I start turn-based games.

Maybe you can play a Malkovich game here on the forum.

Interesting idea, but I might as well play on KGS - no way to know my rank or punish escapers here either.
