That's great news and makes a lot of sense. My understanding is that the 30% of the app price that google keeps is split somehow between google, the phone carrier (if any), and the device manufacturer. If Amazon were to add the google market, yes they would get a smaller share, but they would presumably sell more apps, which might make up the difference. I'll hold out hope!
So based on what you said before would that mean that if they did open the door to goole apps it would be a phone app that would download to the Kindle Fire?

For books, yes; for some apps, yes. For videos, I'm not so sure. It really depends on what people plan to do with it. I think the majority of early adopters will be Kindle users, who will use it mainly for books. It's also pretty sure that Amazon will release a 10" tablet soon; some in the industry think it will be even before Christmas.

Considering that I don't have a problem watching movies on my iPhone, I think I will be okay with watching them on on a 7 inch screen.

I have the Nook Color which has the same 7" form factor and screen resolution as the Amazon Fire. Bought it for e-reading and am very happy with size and usability. It is great for videos as well with a 16:9 ratio. I bought a set of videos on Attacking the Corner from GoCommentary.com and it is very convenient to watch them and a much better experience than watching on my phone. Has Wi-Fi and an okay, but not great, browser, but good enough that I no longer lug my laptop on weekend trips. I will probably by the Fire as well so my wife and I can each have an e-reader. I think the 7" form factor is great - it just needed to be reasonably priced. And of course an SGF reader and a KGS client would be really nice.

Wow, I can't watch videos on a screen that small. I find the iPad to be about the smallest that works for me. (I never had one of those mini-portable-DVD players with a small screen...)

Yes, that's what it looks like. But there is also the chance that Amazon will upgrade their firmware to 3.x (Honeycomb) or later eventually. Google hasn't released the 3.x source code yet, which I'm guessing is why Amazon has 2.3 on their tablet.
If they get google market, and also switch to a newer version of Android when they can, then this tablet would be as good as any for KGS. It's a couple pretty big ifs, but we can hope.

(Of course if it's popular enough then it won't matter to anybody but me whether they add google market or not; I'll have to do the work and get the client there. But I'd rather save myself the effort.)

You can try the Acer Iconia 7". It has Android 3.2 so KGS would look good.

I will take a look at it, but I kind of want the Kindle Fire because I am a really big Amazon user.

The Kindle Fire is getting even more attractive now that they are offering a lending library. I have decided to get an Amazon Prime membership. In order to take advantage of the lending library, however, I will need to get a Kindle.

What if you have Kindle software on other devices?
I just don't know how it works but you can use Kindle on any Android, iPhone, or PC.

A
fun review from a less than enthusiastic user. YMMV - after all, maybe you do not use Google.

Yes. The lending library is for actual Kindle devices, and the streaming video is only for the Kindle Fire and laptops and desktops. You can't stream the video to an iPad. It isn't supported.

I checked out the review. I don't care about those apps. I will probably wouldn't use the Fire for email at all since I would always have my iPhone with me. I only care about one app, and that would be a KGS app. Since I can't be sure it with be available for the Fire any time in the future my best bet is probably to buy a Kindle Touch for 99 bucks, which will not be money wasted even if I eventually buy a Fire, since the Touch would give me an entirely different reading experience for all my Kindle books, and allow me to use the lending library. Assuming that it is worth five dollars a month to me to be able to borrow a book, it wouldn't take long for the Kindle Touch to pay for itself and my husband could borrow it.
I'll just have to be satisfied with using the laptop for the streaming video.
I'm almost ready to buy the Kindle Touch now. I think I have talked myself into it.
