I like :w32: at the border of two moyo's. Better than my O12. I only can appreciate :w30: if I know how W's continuations depend on :b31: and why it has to be played now.

I like :w30: because it is an apparently simple play, yet powerful and far sighted. It does not prevent Black from cutting off the White stones in the bottom left corner, but makes it unpleasant for Black to do so, while reducing Black's potential on the bottom side. :b31: secures the corner and then White defends his stones and Black does likewise. Now :w30: looks at both the bottom side and the center.

:w29: invades Black's corner. 38 is a big point, but White cannot make things too easy for Black. :w33: looks both ways. :b36: is tesuji to guard against the push and cut with sente.

Interesting how many of these masterpiece games end in a small loss. It is not easy to give a strong player two stones. ;)

I was under the impression that 'masterpiece' was often used to describe those small loss against handicap games specifically, as opposed to general games of good play.

:w30: is a dual purpose play, combining attack and defense. It strengthens the White group while preventing the Black group from forming a base. It has become a textbook play, but I still like it. Simple and strong. :)

:b31: attacks the two White stones, but :w32: goes after bigger game. I also like :w34:, which sets up a large scale attack. :)

Tamura was the future Honinbo Shusai Meijin.

The peep at :w30: is simple and strong. :w32: completes the connection. Then :b33: forces White to make bad shape. After :b35: secures territory, :w36: goes on the attack.

Doasku's play in game 7 is astounding. Black's position at move 57 looks reasonable, but after white's 58-60-62 tesuji the poistion suddenly look white-ish as a moyo appears out of thin air.

I'd actually played over Game 8 recently, although I had no idea who either of the payers were. I assumed one was Shusai, since the book also has the group capturing masterpiece in it, but I hadn't worked out who and I was too lazy to put it into a search tool.

The long slide, :w29: keeps Black from making much territory in the corner. :b30: is the standard response. :w31: is unusual. Through :w35: White has bolstered his weak group on the bottom side. After :b36: White sacrifices :w29: and :w31:.



Shuei said that Karigane sees too many plays. ;) That may have been a bit of a dig, but he also said that Karigane's play was like water, which is a high compliment. For one of the plays that Karigane saw, see move 124. :)
