I voted other as well, because I don't feel bothered very much. I am just surprised how many people haven't learnt about good manners. Go is a game that is supposed to teach patience (among other things). Being escaped on is an opportunity to practise these teachings.

You are right, it's a good attitude to treat this as an opportunity for personal improvement. On the other hand, I gotta practice enough patience every day - in my free time, I wanna enjoy. And so I fully agree with Ross' post. You encounter enough impoliteness on the server. Being escaped on is amoung the most severe. So ... well, you can guess my conclusion.

what bothers me most is that I have to sit and wait for 5 min or so to see if my opponent escaped or just lost connection and is trying to get back.

Same here, except my preferred way of dealing with this problem is not playing online much.
Sure you can control your behavior and don't get mad when someone escapes on you, but that doesn't change the fact that you just donated an hour of your time to a jerk.

I use KGS to assess my progress in numerical terms. My serious game, training games with stronger players, and best reviews are all done live.
Therefore I care most about the rating points - mine and his/hers.

Then why not play on a different server? Are you really telling me that you avoid playing Go solely because of escapers? If that were so, why wouldn't you use a different server? Are you sure that's just not an excuse to avoid playing online?

Why wouldn't you encounter escapers on any other server?

You do, but escaping is considered as a loss, with consequent impact on rating.

it is on kgs also -- kgs just allows more time to finish the game before counting it as a loss.
and if its a non-rated game, then its immediately a loss.

Because they don't even say ' Thank you' and just disappear.

like the politeness of welcoming the opponent, and thanking them at the end, so I'd miss that. But no more from an escapee than a resignation. I'd rather he said thanks for the game and escaped than resigned and left without saying anything.
I would like the ability to simply remove the game from the gamelist though - leaving it hanging grates on my OCD for tying up loose ends
same here.

Unfortunately, the above describes half of my opponents on KGS who finish the game - they don't even say "thx" and just disapear.

Is there really a difference between saying "thx" and nothing at all?

there are people who care, so i do it.
if you think it doesnt mean anything you can try like: "it was a nice game, thank you for playing"
same meaning behind but even better

You may perhaps see how I meant the question when I tell you that I usually write "thank you".
