How so? Even now we have games with no numbers at all, and I don't see how this inconveniences the viewers.
Eventually, hopefully, we will reach high numbers. This will be absolutely indistinguishable from what I propose (110607) and not even half as meaningful. Not to mention prone to mistakes and needing constant supervision.
I can understand the sequential numbers being kinky when we had only a handful of games... but in the long run such system is not very practical, I think.
Still... I am not really involved, so will not push the issue. Was just an idear...

I think that you have a point in that the date might be an identifier that is easier to maintain correctly. "125" has little meaning. "06072011" has little meaning, too, but at least it's easy to generate.
Right. And this ease of generation and no need for supervision was my main argument.
And the date identifier would have some more meaning - it would tell you how fast the game is going, sort of. if the game started a year ago, and is till on page 3, this would tell you more about the game if you knew it had the number 1234 and was on page 3. So the viewers would gain, I think. But its just an opinion.

True, though why you want to label a game starting June as being for the 6th of July isn't clear, oh! wait a minute...

Actually, I prefer using the notation you describe, as it is more consistent. I must have been having a weak moment. I should have posted on Monday.

Actually every IT guy (and a lot of others, too) would tell you to reverse the order and use yyyymmdd (20110706 in this case), because in this and only this way "ordering by number" == "ordering by date".

Sure, I'm happy with yyyymmdd, too. That's at least as consistent as ddmmyyyy, and it's nice that you have that feature in ordering.

Being a programming nerd and having to deal with a lot of dated files, I'm very much in support of yyyymmdd.

Also being a nerd, do we need more of an identifier than that? We'll (most likely) end up with games started on the same day and thus have the same identifier. I know the player information should be different, but it's nice to have some thing separate them that is a clear "identifier."
In a related note, I just went through this entire thread and found all of the mishandling of the numbers. Here are the casualties as they stand: 41, 43, 46, 54, 69, 75, 88, and 91.

Also, I will have an update some time soon to the OBITS thread, and may use those numbers to shore up a few games that never ended up with one.

Loons and I are playing. 126? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Clearly yyyymmdd is not error-correcting enough. 2011-(06_June)-12.
Next available number is 127(?)

mw42 seems to not be too interested in our current Malkovich at the moment, so I'm looking to start a new game. (If you're reading this mw42, feel free to resume the game still, or do whatever you want). Any rank is fine; PM me if you're interested

Man, why is it soo hard to resist the temptation to sign up for this thing. I know I shouldn't, but if enough people want to see me play another game, I'll take one against someone random, any rank, any handicap, whatever goes.
I'm not going to put a huge amount of time into it this time, so it's easier to do. However, I'll also try to make my thoughts a bit more entertaining and more "this is what I'm thinking" as opposed to just a bunch of sequences.

Since the more typical case is that we'll be reading this data ourselves rather than trying to parse it, why not do "6 June 2011" (or 6 Jun 2011)? It removes the ambiguity. And the most salient information stands out to the reader.
P.S. I am so sorry for perpetuating this discussion.

Hi, I'd be interested in a game. I'm 5kyu. Less than (or equals to) 5 handi stones on board is perferred. Usually play at proper handi-2, as either white or black. Cheers
