Hane Naoki, Yamashita Keigo and Yoda.

Love to see the 1st 2 duke it out and Yoda's just too cool for words (at least mine).

If Honinbo Jowa did such things, I assume it would only be to indulge in his orphan- and kitten eating habits.

Without having studied pro games, my go idol is Nakayama Noriyuki, for his great go writings.

Yeah, I'm amazed there are so many negative thoughts about Jowa. That's not to say, that he wasn't ambitious. It's highly likely he was. I think many of his games look similar to a modern game, so I actually enjoy reviewing his games. I think it's very forward thinking compared to the other players of that period. I don't really have a favorite though, since I haven't studied enough pro games.

Go Seigen, although he's a bit of an obvious choice because of sheer skill.

Apart from that, Gu Li. He's known for being very aggressive, which would normally put me off, but from the games of his that I've seen his style somehow strikes me as very elegant.

Having said that, the following game against Wang Xi in the 7th Chang-ki Cup is just pure violence. (Sent to me by a Taiwanese friend.)

Let's see. I watched one of countsheep's videos a while back and it was a game that Go Seigen played, and I remember being very impressed by his play. I also like countsheep's analysis and other videos (Ten minute go series).

I like Shusaku, too. While right now I don't understand the Ear-reddening game and why the ear-reddening move was so good, my goal is to eventually get there.

Cho U and Cho Chikun also, since they both seem to be so dominant when they're both playing their best.

So I guess Go Seigen, Honinbo Shusaku, Cho U, and Cho Chikun.

I watched this game live on a demo board with commentary from two current pros at Tiandi Jian in Beijing. Even they didn't really know what was going on, and then it was over

Unbelievable game indeed. Chess commentators say in such situations "the game is dynamically balanced", meaning "I have no idea what is going on" :D

To my untrained eye, that opening sure looks unimpressive, from both players.

Although I personally have no idea what is involved, I gather the above game is special because White loses because of the Ing superko rule.

It should also be noted that Gi Li gave up a time penalty.

Can you (or someone) show how? I can't find a way for white to make it into triple ko in the first place due to A14...

Except for the expected ones (Go, Shusaku, Jowa) from an earlier era I am surprised that so many people of mentioning only players from the last 20 years or so. Someone mentioned Kitani but except for my two choices (Sakata, Shuko) there seems to be none from 1900-1970. Why is this?

Maybe because there's not enough English language history for us to draw from. We need more Go history books.

Sure, many of their games may be available, but there's only so much time in a day to review all these pro games :)
