Re: Why do some people stay at the same rank?
I think learning is a very complex subject in itself.
There are different learning styles. Some people are good at self-teaching while others are dependent on having a teacher whose teaching style matches their learning style (and this is where opportunity becomes important too). I think personality traits also play an important role. A hunger for knowledge, self-reflection, self-discipline and patience probably have a positive effect, but a strong ego and performance anxiety may have a negative effect.

I suppose confidence often goes together with being a strong player. But learning requires an open mind. A strong ego can get in the way of self-reflection and accepting feedback from a teacher.

Probably good to have some balance: not too modest, not too arrogant - seek the truth.
be immersed

I used to be proud, but I learned my lesson. Now I'm perfect.Kirby wrote:Probably good to have some balance: not too modest, not too arrogant - seek the truth.

I stopped making progress when I reached the point where the pain of studying harder was getting bigger than the fun of being stronger.

An alternative view from Lewis Carroll: "If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there."Why do some people stay at the same rank? Because they work very hard for it!
(paraphrase from Chapter 6 of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)

I burst out in laughter because this original observation is actually very true. It's also quite comforting: the hard work of the past decades is not lost, it has prevented me from falling down!Gomoto wrote:Why do some people stay at the same rank? Because they work very hard for it!
Thanks Gomoto.

Re: Why do some people stay at the same rank?
My teacher says many are taking their effort on a wrong path.
While improving, their strength, in terms of winrate, will go back (by the way Cho Chikun 9p have said the same).
Why?, because you are a beginner on such new skills/new ways of thinking. By how much?, even two or three stones(2-3 kyu/dan). For how long?, as long as 6 month, sometimes a year. And these players, including myself, revert to their old ways.
The other reason is that they, including myself, forget what they have learned because they acquired it only as knowledge and did not embed it into their skillset/thought process.
The advice by my teacher is, persist in mastering new skills/new ways of thinking until it becomes your intuition/basic instinct, even if you have to lose 1000 games.
