I play piano and guitar. I played viola for a few years when I was in elementary and intermediate school as well.

I used to play the harmonica pretty well. For bending notes, play around with tongue placement, keeping the tip fairly close to the teeth.

I don't like the harmonica anymore because it's so limited. You're either playing blues or folk and in both cases the harmonica sounds kinda kitschy and dated. Of course there's also the chromatic harmonica but it's much less expressive (can't bend notes well or change the timbre much) and ridiculously difficult to play (the notes are arranged in a very stupid way in a failed attempt to accommodate diatonic harmonica players).

I've played and enjoyed classical piano my entire life (some favorite composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Barber). I also played the viola for several years in elementary-middle school, which I'll probably come back to some day.

In a way, though, I think that is the charm of the little guy. I kinda want to hook a Mic up through guitar pedals, just to see what new noises I can make with the harmonica like that ;)

EDIT: I should add I just do this for fun, and am in no way shape or form an expert. It sounds like you have a TON more experience than me.

Pity. If you were that yoyoma I'm pretty sure my girlfriend would suddenly gain much more interest in go.

It kinda sucks that most of you decided to quit what you played...I could seriously never see myself quitting playing cello or composing, but that probably has something to do with the fact that I'm a music major hellbent on having a career in music.

I didn't quit anything... just sort of drifted away.
Mainly because I ran out of bands to play in (also I never owned my own euphonium), I've got no soloist intent at all.

Btw, any of the other brass players here heard of the Youngbloods Brass Band? New Orleans marching band crossed with hip hop - very tasty.

I played guitar for a very long time - rock, blues fingerpicking, and some classical.

A dozen or so years ago, I took up the viola da gamba, one of the most beautiful instruments with a solo repertoire. Following a car accident, I couldn't play it, so I stopped; it's too bad, because I really loved that sound.

Then about 7 years ago, I bought a digital piano, in the hopes of learning to play the keyboard. I made some progress, but there are no teachers locally, then a health issue made it hard to play, so I gave it up. Anyone want to buy a Yamaha P-80?

The instruments I know and can play quite well are the
Piano
Violin
Upright Bass ( Finger and Bow )
Dizi ( A type of Chinese Flute )
Guitar
Mandolin

Currently somewhat learning or have taken an interest in
Yangqin
Bagpipes
Celtic Harp

Can we classify Go as an instrument ( Lol )? or at least a form of art, because when someone plays the game with a passion it is as though they are painting a picture and for them it is their form of art, their way to express beauty, execution, style just like many forms of art.

When I'm not busy, or playing and learning Go; I like playing piano. Right now, I'm working on Bach's Well Tempered Clavier Book 1 and Chopin's 24 Preludes. I also like to improvise and compose, for fun sometimes.
I also own a guitar, but I'm not very good, at playing it. It just makes my fingers hurt.

I can play guitar and I've been playing it for 5 years. I use to play classical guitar in a conservatory of music, but I also love playing electric guitar

I play mainly guitar. I perform publicly under the nom de plume of George Burl. I am also classically trained in composition, though I often spend time composing music that is off of the classical path.

I play many other instruments peripherally. The piano is mostly a compositional tool for me thought I enjoy improvising jazz and blues and sometimes stumbling my way through Schubert pieces.

To followup on my earlier post... this time I couldn't resist anymore. I'm attempting to learn guitar. My wife wanted an electric guitar to mess with. Its too pretty not to play.

It took me almost a week, but I can now pick the thing up and play a D chord without muting the E string. And of course, I learned the requisite Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I tend to mess with the amp a bit with that one, to see how many different ways I can make it sound. Yes, I know, I'm a newb-- simple accomplishments amuse me. ;)

I have a couple of very quick pictures of the guitar here: http://blog.lunchisoptional.com/2010/11 ... thday.html
