@ Topazg - I've lost 18 of my last 20 games and am considering a brain transplant. I think my main problem is one of attitude. My attitude is: "chances are good that at a critical juncture in the game, I will play a move that I will instantly regret." Probably a teaching game won't cure me of this, so I might not be the best candidate, but I'd like one nonetheless.

I'm guessing some sort of a list set up by an organizer would be needed; I don't think it can be automated, not on the forum at least.

I've lost about 15 games straight myself. No idea what to do when that happens, other than take up checkers...

I totally forgot to update with the fact I'd taken up Hushfield already, but as you're the same grade, you can take it as well, so I'll do two teaching games instead :)

If it helps (I think it makes for more use of the time!), please feel free to add my on Skype with my username topazg, and we can do a proper audio lesson - they generally take around 90 minutes.

I'll schedule as soon as I get back from holiday, but it will likely be next week ... hope that's ok!

Thanks Topazg, that's great! :bow: I've never had an official teaching game before, so I'm really looking forward to it!

I'll give any single digit kyu player three teaching games(on different days, to get a better feel of their overall level) with individual game reviews, along with a comprehensive review at the end on what I think their strengths and weaknesses are as a player, and what I think they need to do in order to improve.

After all, 'twas the season.

If no one else already has, I would love to take you up on this?

You still need to set up a time for us to do our game/games on Sunday. =)

Yeah, I already got one, Terr, but I'll go ahead and give you a teaching game after I'm finished with these three.

Ha, finally someone I can offer my services to.
Yes, I'm only 12k but I believe that topazg is right when he says that good teaching depends more on teaching ability and less on playing ability as long as the teacher is several stones stronger. Plus if all the ddk teach the 20-30k range, and the sdk teach the ddk, and the dans teach the sdk: everybody is happy (Well, except maybe the high-dans so maybe the rest of us should chip in and buy the high-dans a pro teaching game :D )

If so far taught about 3 people go who managed a reasonably fast improvement (20k in 2 weeks). My teaching style focuses on a lot of games on the 9x9 with reviews and varying handicaps (from 9 stones down to 3). The extreme amount of handicap stones is imho necessary so that the student has a sense of achievement (i.e. last week I needed 6 stones, now I'm down to 3 :D )

If you are of course 11k then you got the wrong guy.

Just pm me if you are interested,
Mnemonic

I like the idea of having online teaching games on KGS. However, I do not like the idea of having a list of students and teachers and having to agree on appointments via PMs. I think this is just to much hassle.

I also agree that it is much nicer to do this within the L19 community than doing it in the KTL room.

But there was a GoDiscussions room on KGS a while ago. Is it still there? Do we have an L19 room instead now?

We could just use that room and whoever likes to teach or receive teaching just puts a game up with info 'Want Teaching' or 'Willing to Teach', or such. For me, that would be the best solution.

And then it would be very nice if we could have a thread here in the forum where people could just enter the teaching game they just played. This would be nice to keep track of the whole thing. At the beginning of this thread there should be a list which is maintained by someone :) . This list would also include the L19 and KGS handles and time of play. So people could even look up the teaching game records on KGS.

Hm, instead of a list of teaching games that happened at the beginning of a thread, it would be even easier to omit that and give a direct link to the SGF file on KGS with each post in the thread. That should suffice.

The only moderation effort for the thread would then be to make sure that only reports of teaching games that happened end up in the thread, no other chatter. Maybe a few short remarks. If someone feels the need for some explanations or diagrams, those could be put into HIDE tags.

So a post in this thread could look like this:

Teacher: {L19 handle} {Rank} - Student: {L19 handle} {Rank}

{Link to SGF file on KGS}

{optional short comment}

{optional lengthier comments in HIDE tags}

I think it would be advisable to have a standard format for the thread entries to allow for quick browsing.

As always, I love to teach.

Still in a transitional period in life, so I'm probably not available until February, but I will teach anyone who's interested ... beginner to 6k definitely welcome, and if you're stronger (say, from 2k to 5k) we can always do an even game plus a discussion afterwards. :D

As to a Teaching Ladder, perhaps just a list of teachers, something concerning their availability (Timezone and regular Go hours, if any), their strength, and their contact info ... and maybe a blurb about themselves. Teaching games can be arranged by the students with whatever teacher they wish, and the games can be played in the L19 room.

Wow, that's pretty nice to have the free teaching. I've done quite a bit of teaching myself with people that have never played the game before and always trying to help people out if I manage to beat them at the club. I haven't considered teaching online, but that might be a good idea, although I'm not really that high of a level yet (still studying and reading!).

Only problem is I have yet to manage a regular game with anyone here, so I don't know how you could organize a teaching system.
