Huh?? The sole virtue of MW's egoseki was that he could play G4 in sente and march along the 'line of victory'. But he attacks a light stone on the other side of the board.

FWIW, the "line of victory" refers to when you are making edge territory with 4th line stones, not when having them on the center side :P

His move is a fairly common framework builder shape, but not normally with a gap this wide. I've seen it played a few times with D4 and C6 in play (both as White stones), where the invasion for Black is not so easy. Here, I will wait with interest to see what magicwand can salvage out of this one.

From my observation Magicwand thrives on having a group to attack. He said himself "if he jumps in...he will regret it." This move seems consistent with Magicwand's style of play.

this is going to be intresting :)
imo: his two point extension doesnt look that good. it feel's like he is trying to squeeze into tight space.
and i dont see any other extension that fixes that akward looks.
i will post my plan later after he makes his move.

Making the two-space extension from :bc: ('a') is naive, although instinctively pleasing. What is the purpose of :bc: ? It is to keep White's left side in check and ensure he doesn't build some monstrous framework, not to settle (although these are not mutually exclusive).

'a' may allow my group to settle, sure, but it can be "flattened" very easily. Center access is prioritized over living on the side, and this concept applies in over 9000 Go scenarios. White's E5 group is not in any danger either because it has plenty of leeway into the center, but my last move does add some pressure. It is also not easy for White to play a timid, slow, gote move like 'b' if danger were to ever arise down there.

I don't know why I remember this, but in an older AGA yearbook that analyzed a game by John Lee, a situation similar to this (in idea) was discussed briefly where John chose to jump out instead of making base. If anyone knows what I'm referencing and could post a snippet that'd be nice.

For Araban:
I get your reasoning for the jump, but not for your original wedge. If the idea of :bc: isn't to make 'a' and 'b' miai, why not play one space closer at :ec: instead to limit the top even more?

This direction is clearly wrong, because White ends up with terrible shape. Additionaly, White does not already have an extension in place, which makes the pattern even worse. But, (people can correct me if I'm wrong, but Takemiya always played this joseki even with his san-ren-sei in place:

Joaz's suggestion of playing a is also wrong:

Place of 8 is up to the player to decide, both suggested are fine. White's wall is doing nothing while black got a solid chunk of territority.

:w1: is way to ambiutious. It would be fine if white already had an extension along the leftside, but now with :b12: Black just walk in there and it's getting clear white will end up with no points. Black choice of :b12: is really nice, because after :w13: and :b14: whites group in lowerleft is starting to look really weak. A would be counterted with B now, so white can only play C.

Please note that :w13: leaves the obvious uber-beautiful-worthtomarry point at 3-3.. If Black gets to play that one, I would resign immediately as white =)

So conclusion so far:

The opening is terrible, _terrible_ for white. If this was a KGS game, I might resign already :-). But, MagicWand is used to be in losing positions after the opening, and his real strength shows in middle game so I guess the game will still offer plenty of excitement :)

I feel there is not much I can do near the top, and that most of my possibilities remain near the bottom as White's group, while pretty safe, is still nonetheless baseless so there's some potential there. Plus if he had approached from the other direction, then I think the two-space extension is okay because B14 is huge and I don't feel nearly as contained then.

Fredrik:
dont comment too hard on our game.. we are only mid dan. :)

i was afraid he might play that which was correct.
i guess he is stronger than i gave him credit for..
if he makes his two point extension that would have been terrorable mistake for black..
i think this is very important lesson SDKs or low dans must learn from our game..

but his two stone is still my target and will be attacked because i am stronger fighter.
and i will see how many bullets he will dodge.

Making the two-space extension from :bc: ('a') is naive, although instinctively pleasing. What is the purpose of :bc: ? It is to keep White's left side in check and ensure he doesn't build some monstrous framework, not to settle (although these are not mutually exclusive).

'a' may allow my group to settle, sure, but it can be "flattened" very easily. ...

Can you show us the approximate sequence that you thought would flatten black? Thanks.

Gonna try to cram 3 weeks worth of material from my stochastic calculus class in 1 day at the library, so I'll be a bit busy today. I'll post my move tonight (and answer Joaz's question, although if someone else can answer it that'd be nice too, as it'd show me that others understand my concept of "flattening").

But let me post some brief thoughts:

I said earlier that if White were to play :wc: , it would be slow and gote. It is slow, but what I wonder is whether it is really gote. It is quite clear that he wants to play a move like 'a' so he can bully my group around. So the questions I'm really asking myself are:

  1. Should I play where my opponent wants to play?
  2. If I play a big move elsewhere and he caps, could I survive?

(The answer to question 2 depends if I'm listening to a particular song by Gloria Gaynor.)
