This is why I prefer iOS devices: no fragmentation of the market (or compatibility issues). I had considered the Amazon tablet, and yes, only because of KGS, but if it'll be tied to the Amazon store (makes sense, they will probably sell it at below production costs) and wms has no interest in supporting it, there's no point.

What a shame. I was really considering buying this tablet. But I won't if I can't get KGS on it.

Sounds like there is an extortion opportunity for wms :)

Seriously? Do you have to implement the protection? That's odd.

And people criticize Apple's app store...

On the google app store, yes you do. You insert code that contacts the app store and confirms that the app has been properly purchased. On the Amazon app store, you have to remove such code, and Amazon wraps your app in something that checks.

My understanding is that in Apple's app store, the protection is all on the end user phone, which won't let you install an app other than by paying for it. Once the app is on the phone, there is no need any more for any kind of copy protection or checking. Yes, it makes things easier for the authors, but on the other hand I've installed several apps from non-market sources, it's handy sometimes, so I'd call this one a win for Android overall.

Nit: you mean "other than by getting it from the AppStore."

That's the way it is on all desktop computers. Even the new Mac app store either doesn't protect software or does something woefully inadequate (developers were kvetching after the store launched, but I can't remember the details).

Developers were kvetching because they hadn't bothered to read the documentation about inserting a receipt file. They've read it now, and no longer complain. But they don't add any protection; merely a file with some info about the app.

Seems you're right about that. But it doesn't change the point that OS implemented validation is new and rare.

Agreed. Though maybe the Palm had something similar back in the day... I know you could download stuff from freeware sites, but I seem to recall they had a store. (But this is back 10 years or so...)

BTW, I'm sure Microsoft will do that with their Windows App Store. I just wonder how many versions of the store they will have.
