Seriously... for me the best RPG games/series ever were Morrowind (and the rest of ES ilk), Wizardry, M&M (all except the first and the last), and possibly EOB, but this long time ago... I am judging not only on the fun I have had but also on the amount of hours a game kept me occupied.

If I had to vote for two best games of all time, my vote would be on Morrowind and 'Crusaders of the Dark Savant' of the Wizardry series. If I had time to play right now, it would certainly be Morrowind, no doubt about it. Even Oblivion falls way short...

There were other good ones... the BG series (Baldur's Gate I & II, Icewind Dale I & II, Torment) were ok, but I found them too restrictive. You had plenty of room but you only could go here and here but not there. There were also other aspects I did not like about it. Maybe I am spoiled by Morrowind...

FF series I have never played. Each time I think of the FF games I picture the silly Japanese images of little boys and girls with fluffed up hairs carrying huge swords easily 5 times their size... I dunno... guess I just don't get it. But I was always put off by the imagery surrounding the FF games.

Was never attracted to the online games very much.

As much as I love Square Enix, yeah, the online games were garbage. But that's just my opinion.

Definitely! I guess I'd place it in my top 5 GBA RPGs (not counting SNES remakes/ports).

QFT

Anyway, who's looking forward to Skyrim? I never really got into the Elder Scroll games, but I figure what the heck. Have this one on preorder (along with Dark Souls--Demon's Souls is easily my favorite PS3 RPG).

The aesthetic changes pretty markedly starting with FF7--you're thinking of the latter stuff.

You can thank Tetsuya Nomura for that.

I haven't played too many RPG's lately, but Chrono Trigger is still by far my favorite. I just grew really attached to the story and the characters.

Another RPG that I enjoyed but haven't seen mentioned is "Skies of Arcadia." It can become a little tedious at times, with the random encounters, but the environments and story are so much fun! Air pirates and floating islands rock!! Compared to other RPG's I'm particularly fond open world maps, where you can pretty much travel wherever you please (ie FF7).

One more game, which I haven't finished so I can't give you too much of a writeup; I was enjoying a game called "Rogue Galaxy" before I left the US. I don't have a Playstation 2 anymore so I've haven't been able to play it since.

EDIT: In addition, the "Pokemon" games are really well designed RPG's but i refuse to play them due to their addictive qualities...

Yeah, most probably.

But wait! I used to have a FF game on my old gameboy some 20 years back! It was actually my favorite game! So maybe I should rethink my opinion about FF?...
Well, I guess the time is too restrictive for me these days to start another project of such scope - hundreds of hours set aside to explore an RPG.
Still, I should not have ditched FF like that.
