If you don't mind lots of oil from people's hands getting on them, not really. However, it is nicer to use one that is clean.

Nifty! But how long had it been since the previous washing? And is washing a routine thing? If so, what is the frequency?

Yearly at our club, would be more often if something made it necessary.
