I like "L19".. not very descriptive I suppose but I can imagine saying to someone "yeh I spent all morning reading L19 .. glad my boss didn't catch me" - if I could read it at work  . I'm not really old or really young but it sounds more young than Godiscussions without being embarrassingly so. Also in Cambridge, UK, the Go club sometimes meets in a cafe called CB1 (only been there the once) - apparently the oldest internet cafe in the world.

But is it not called L19. L19 sounds more like a point on the board and as we all know a point in the first line is not usually a good place to play. The full name is LIFEIN19X19, which is too much of a mouthful for my taste. And not only that, it appear to exclude discussion of small board games.

Sure, I understand what the full name is :D , I was suggesting it as a possibility based on how I'd abbreviate it in conversation, or in posts - avoiding the mouthful factor. Perhaps I spend too much of my working day with acronyms though.

Having 19 in the name isn't too bad IMHO even though it ignores 9x9 and 13x13 since 19x19 is the most important board dimensions.

I still like L19! but I really don't mind what it's called as long as it works.

Life in 19x19 is a more poetic name but to me it sounds more like a blog name.

Should we make a clean break and start anew or should we just see this as a new start for GoDiscussions?

.com is for commercial ventures. .org is or .net is better. Are either godiscussion.org or godiscussions.net available. That would be better. Don offer to transfer godiscussion.com so maybe tha tcan be redirected for some period of time.

I think that GoDiscussions.ORG would be a great name. It has the attachment to the old name, but the .ORG signifies that this site is a non-profit community venture.

In fact, I like the idea so much I just registered GoDiscussions.org. I'll hold it for the site until we come to a consensus and transfer it to whomever we deem best at no charge if we decide to use it. (Impulsive I know, but when it comes to domains it's best to register first and think later)

I like godiscussions.org, but like I've said before, I wouldn't mind another.

Regardless of what domain name is chosen, as long as it uses 361 instead of 19x19 (cause I want it to hurry up and multiply out) I'll be fine.

Point them all to one site. We don't need to have just one name.

If we're going to re-open this discussion, I guess I'll mention that I still have discuss-go.org.

I think the first question to answer is; what to do about GoDiscussions.com? Do we want to be associated with the old site? Are we going to take Don up on his offer to transfer the name?

While I have no opinion on what canonical name to use, I'm strongly in favor of taking over godiscussions.com as a secondary domain.

As I see it, the situation is the following:
* Don gave you a db dump of all posts/threads of gd.com which will be imported to L19
* Don offered to transfer the domain
* Don probably won't put in the work to keep gd.com as a working archive over the next years.
* There are links to gd.com threads, both internal and external. And broken links are obviously annoying

From this I conclude that we should take over the domain, and create a script that redirects the old links to the new threads.

To make this possible you have to create a mapping between the ThreadIDs and PostIDs on GD and L19 when you import the threads. This shouldn't be too hard, and as a benefit old links won't break, which IMO is very important.

Some thing else, though, we probably want to set up the dump into a read-only archived forums. Maybe use that for the old GD.com? That could become too confusing, though, when people go there, unless we have some big banners or info displayed to point people to the fact that it is an archive.

Yep, I think having "this is an archive" would work.
