That's precisely the problem golem7 was talking about. You copy "professional moves" without understanding them. That's basically the same as memorizing joseki, which is universally accepted to be very bad. And saying "well I saw this move in a pro game though the surrounding situation was different" is like trying to justify playing A1 as your first move, because you once saw it in some pro endgame. (It's a pro move, right? What could possibly go wrong.)

Either way, we should really stop hijacking our future 7dan's study journal with this discussion :D

edit: fixed typo.

Ma Xiaochun and Wang Lei played that corner sequence in 1997 (on a very different board), but it doesn't seem to be pro-validated. Or maybe it's had a recent vogue and eidogo hasn't caught up? Either way, I forgive myself for not recognizing it. :)

90% of go strength is reading ability. IMO you will need to increase your reading depth by about 1-2 stones per rank for every dan rank. From where you are now, that would mean at least 5-7 moves extra reading depth.

I have not seen a pro game where reading was so important. Anytime people usually say "wow pros are great at reading" it usually wasn't longer than 20 moves, but the IDEA was amazing. If you can have the idea.. The reading isn't the hard part.

From your book thread, I really think you should reconsider getting the Lee Sedol book. I think you'll see some impressive reading depth.

Good luck in your journey. I'm guessing you're still young. If so, maybe you've got a better than average chance to make your goal.

Struggling with adjusting back to computer go after reviewing pro games on real board. I prefer the real board.

Haven't played much rated games on kgs yet, but I beat two 2 dans on wbaduk, a 3k on kgs giving him 2 handicap, and lost to a 5Dan? on kgs in a fight that I should have avoided and just won.

Here is the game with the 5dan:

We reviewed so I know some of my mistakes, no time to post the branches.

I guess that 5D? Is now a solid 7D on kgs.

That account has played 11 ranked games. They very much look like a high dan player but to say they've a solid rank is pushing it a bit. They've only played 2 games as a 7d...
