I know what you mean and I'm particularly a fan of UPS, I'm just a bit turned off by the idea of calling a company crap for late deliveries at this time of the year if you didn't shell out the considerable money needed for guaranteed delivery. Sorry if I came off a bit snappy it reads a lot more severely than I intended it to be.

I think the bigger problem was losing the package the first time, not taking too long around Christmas.

This is the set I have now: http://www.amazon.com/Go-Game-with-Wood-Board/dp/B00000IZPL/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1386254279&sr=8-2&keywords=go

The board is super small as are the stones. They are about the size 'if not smaller' than an M&M. Hard for adults to use but good enough to get a feel for if you want to spend more on a real set.

This was also the first go set that I ever purchased, although I found it at a holiday Game kiosk in a mall. I used 1 or 2 times before the size made me hate it. The feeling of a real sized board is much better. My actual board was ordered from YMI and it was a great set.

I have that set too but I found the small stones and board were only a minor annoyance. The instruction booklet that comes with it is embarrassingly bad though. It just blabbers on and on annoyingly.

In the US, at least, I know there's an only slightly smaller than normal sized set that Barnes and Noble is selling as one entry in what appears to be a classic games collection (along with chess, backgammon, etc.). I haven't tried it, but it may be a better place to point people looking for a first set than that one on amazon with the 12" board.

This is it here:

The box is probably about the size of a scrabble set, maybe a tad bit larger.

I think the criticism is justified.

UPS should be able to plan ahead. Christmas is predictable: it happens at the same time every year. If they are caught by something unexpected, such as a hurricane, then we should cut them some slack.

My business gets busy every Christmas too. I don't let the customers get screwed. I schedule extra employees, stock up on consumables, etc. When the surge in business occurs, we can handle it.

I plan ahead. UPS can do it too.

How many thousands does your business employ? How many millions of parcels will it move around this month? I'm curious.

Okay, let's move away from the direction the conversation is moving in. It's a moot point now as I have my package waiting on me at home.

Now for my shift to end so I can try out my shiny new goban! I'll see about posting some pics later.

Sorry, Rowen and others, I apologise. I'm being overly snappy.

Enjoy the new goban.

You've got us on the edge of our seats here. What happened? :)

Was the package there when you got home? What do you think of the new set? Is the color of the board and bowls as impressive as it looks online? What are your impressions of the board's quality and stability? Do the bowls seem like they are durable? How do you feel about single convex now that you've seen the stones? Did you get some oil to polish the stones with? Have you played a game with it yet?

I suspect the go board has lured away yet another one of our users. It's a sad flaw of the forum.

I will update you guys later today on the events of that night. I work Fri-Sat-Sun, so I'm kinda of sluggish and don't do much on those 12 hour work days. I'll give you guys the details (with pics) after all the running around I have to do today.

Okay, here's the breakdown of when I got the package.

I knew it was waiting on me, around 3pm my wife text me a picture of it sitting beside my desk! I think the quality is superb and love the way it looks. The board and bowls are actually more impressive than the pictures on the YMI site.

The board is very sturdy with a heft that seems appropriate to its size. The quality of the wood grain is amazing and the finish is nice and smooth. The bowls seem durable and the reddish hue is beautiful!

The single convex stones are really nice! I can't compare to double convex since I've never used either. I like the feel of them and the weight feels 'right', so no complaints from me.

That first night was spent just looking at the board and washing the powder off the stones. That took far more time than I thought. I did buy some sewing machine oil to polish them with but have yet to do that.

Once we were done washing (and drying) the stones me and my girls played some capture go on the 9x9 board. It's quality wasn't half bad either and I was amazed it had a felted bottom. All-in-all the set is amazing and I couldn't be more happy with the product. Here are some pics:
