I have the same problem with time-management, but for me it's not so much an issue of long-time reading but figuring out the direction of play. Especially in situations, which don't comfort me, I tend to look around for ten minutes before I play wrong ^^
But well, as for the reading issue, I think knowing and being able to spot Tesujis does a great deal to your reading speed, but this applies more to close combat and life and death situations, I guess.
I, for once, don't read everything out what I play. Most of the things I play, I do so with the confidence of choosing and playing out a Joseki. If my oppenents derivates from what I expect, I start to read.
So, I guess, most of the time, I probe around on shape-points, knowing there is something, but not knowing exactly what I can get.

Again, admittedly he played this not so well (I'm sure I didn't, too) and almost died with this new group. But well, then it came down to reading and I think then it's called for longer reading sessions.
On the other hand, without some experience how to handle certain situations, it might still be very time consuming to play like that. Here for example move

to

(first diagram) are textbookish to move out in the center and didn't require very much reading.
