My thoughts as well.
Right now its biggest issue seems to be making you pay an astounding amount of money for the most basic features. Which, as someone said earlier, is

I've logged in the last couple days....I tried to invite someone to a game, didn't get a response. I tried to use automatch, but I don't think that was set up to work. Tried to observe a game, it drew the board, but didn't show any moves. Of course I'm on a pretty unstable connection so that could be part of it. Anyone else able to play?

John Lee beat Jimmy Cha face to face in the US Fujitsu Cup preliminary. He has won the US Open and the Ing as well and finished very high in the World Amatuers.
On the other hand, some rust was showing when he played in the Cotsen last year....

There are only 5 or so opponents available. And the software sucks big time. It is like it is still in beta beta stage.

Looks like they will even manage bets. Now there is a money making idea.

I have no problem with betting, monthly fees and everything else, but charging for kifu is a gamebreaker. I will never play on a server that does that.

With sandbagging as bad as it is online, I can't image what it would be like if there was a monetary reward for it.

go9dan.com Grand Opening Date: January 20, 2013.
I'm intrigued. And highly skeptical - I just registered and logged in and found that I was the only one on the server.

It doesn't. Worryingly, though, full membership is described as follows (emphasis mine): "Most economical and popular membership. Full access and
maximum discounts."

That is troubling to me. Makes it seem like even full paid members will still be paying for yet more things... hmm

There are KGS and IGS in the English speaking world, but they are inferior in quality and functionality comparing to Korean go servers (Tygem, Oro). Some of Korean go servers made a english client, but there aren't many users, for language and cultural difference. So we wanted to make a high quality English go server.

Maybe true from an asian point of view, they love all the fancy and キラキラ (¿twinkling?) interface with lot of non-core functionality... in terms of web and software UX practice they tend to be far behind western companies.
But is what asian customers want

@burrkitty: Seems to be that, you need to pay for teaching games and lectures (because the "gold"/money goes directly to the teacher), but you get a discount if you are a premium member.

AGA-European Go Team vs. Sedol 10 Game Serieshttp://go9dan.com/Home/Promotion/4Game 1: Sedol Lee vs. Andy Liu
Date: January 20, 2013 @8am EST
The first game will start at even game with 6.5 komi. If either side wins two games in a row, the handicap for the next game will change as follows:
Even -> black with no komi -> black with 3 points reverse komi -> 2 stones
It goes both ways so for example if the Western team wins the first two games, then Lee would play the next game at black with no komi.
I think the team will being rotating through each player until the 10-games are played. But it's just a guess.
