Re: Mainstream Go Sightings
Oxford University Press seems a little schizophrenic in that it publishes both an Oxford English Dictionary and an Oxford Dictionary of English, and both in various formats. I think the difference is that the OED focuses on history and etymology and the ODoE on popular usage.Reading the OED (2008), p. 168, S; among some meanings of go.
My own vade mecum is a rather big Oxford Dictionary of English (2005). It mentions go but incorrectly. The entry is "A Japanese board game of territorial possession and capture. ORIGINL late 19th cent.: Japanese, literally 'small stone', also the name of the game." (The small stone bit is wrong.) But I suppose we should be grateful for any mention.
However, I have also been told that the really big OED also includes an entry for ko. I have no easy access to the big OED to check, and if it is there I'd not be surprised to see the old claptrap about Buddhist aeons.

It happens around 1 PM every Sunday from April to September in my case. The early rounds of the NHK Cup on Japanese television are usually a guaranteed nap.fireproof wrote:I have to protest -- that character fell asleep watching a pro game! There's a bit later in the badlands, near where you first meet the fixer in that area, I think. A group of characters is watching two others play Go. There is some dialogue about the complexities of the game. Pretty sure it's the exact same board position as from that mission from the police-lass mission.Yakago wrote:Cyberpunk 2077 - Found my first Go board ..

Koppelman and Levien enjoy games and have form writing in the argot of gameplayers accurately and impressively. They are the guys who wrote "Rounders", comfortably the best poker movie ever made. Doesn't surprise me that they made sure their Go scenes are passable.

I've heard somewhere that Paul Giamatti is a Go player, perhaps he helped to make it believable.

Re: Mainstream Go Sightings
Just been watching Peacock's adaptation of "Brave New World" and Go features prominently in several scenes.
The stones they chose are pretty ugly, the games don't always look plausible in the close-ups, and there is a thematic reveal that uses the idea of a "suicide move" that doesn't super work as a metaphor.
The rest of the show isn't too bad though.
