Re: Kirby's Study Journal
A couple of top of the head comments on the game vs. oggy.
Why not the pincer cum approach of R-13?
Why the footsweep? If you don't want to reply at F-16 or F-17, surely a pincer is indicated, to work with the White stones in the bottom left.
Too close, I think. How about C-11 or D-12?
Very bad. Surely G-14.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
@Shaddy
Thanks for the review. I noticed you left a few tsumego problems: At least this move works, I think: Since black cannot play at 'a', white can live.
So the only other option might be to push, but then it's already a living shape.
Maybe I'm missing something since it's my own game, but those options seem to work.
For the second question...
I think the status is that white is dead.
After
, below, I don't know how to live.
For example:
So I was very stupid to ignore this in the game.
Regarding a few of your other comments:
"C16 puts more liberty pressure on Black. Either way, White's got a very promising game."
> Good point.
"Come on!"
> To be honest, I didn't even consider the variation you showed. But I like your point that putting stones next to opponent's stones doesn't constitute pressure. "I have to put them in the direction he's trying to go in." I felt like I was "pressuring" and attacking two groups, but it looks like I was just letting his group get stronger since I played in the wrong direction.
"J18 would be better here. This is the kind of move you cannot play unless you have checked that it works."
> Yes, I have a tendency to accept too much risk without reading out the result. It's a big problem.

Actually, it's not 100% clear to me after this position in the second problem:

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Interesting. I feel that white isn't doing great locally in the bottom right, but I suppose that it's okay, considering the whole board - and it prevented black from doing something fancy on the bottom (or enclosing).Bill Spight wrote:

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
I thought about this more during my lunch break.
I'm starting to think it can result in ko in multiple ways: The sad part is, I'm not 100% sure, yet. This seems like something I shouldn't struggle with as much, but I guess I am.
I'll think about this more, as I go back to my day job.

I guess the negative part of this move is that I strengthen his group. Is that it?

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
My sense is that R-13 is a dual purpose play, while the approach from the top allows Black to shore up his weakness on the right. Still, you may be right.Kirby wrote:Bill Spight wrote:A couple of top of the head comments on the game vs. oggy.

It seems clear that the White group on the left side is too far away and that it will work better with a pincer.Kirby wrote:> I think the footsweep is a conditional move - the condition being that white has backup on the left side of the board and on the top. Yes, you strengthen the Black group. See http://senseis.xmp.net/?SqueezingOutTheToothpasteKirby wrote:> Shaddy suggested the same, but I don't totally get it. But you also end up weakening your floating stones. Three stones in a row on the E file are hardly strong. They are, in fact, heavy. Better to strengthen your two stones now with a jump to G-14.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
The large knight's move is often a mistake, as it seems to be here. White should live with 2 through 6. Black can't play 7 because of 8, so White can play 'a' to live after Black connects. The small knight's looks like the move, making ko. But the ko does not seem like such a burden for White. White takes first after 7. When Black retakes after a ko threat/response, 8 is an internal ko threat. Again after take, threat, response, retake, White can play 'a' as an internal ko threat, answered by 'b'. If later White decides to win the ko, the play at 'c' creates life via a double ko. Somewhere along the way White can choose to play 'd' as another internal ko threat since there is a White stone on C12 in the game. At the point in the game where Black attacked the corner, though, White is probably better off to give up the corner in exchange for two moves in a row on the outside. There are a lot of large normal moves that White could take advantage of.Kirby wrote:I thought about this more during my lunch break.

Hey, ez4u. Actually, I read this variation, too, but then I was afraid of this response:ez4u wrote: The large knight's move is often a mistake, as it seems to be here. White should live with 2 through 6. Black can't play 7 because of 8, so White can play 'a' to live after Black connects.

I see, Bill. I stopped reading after 5 in the second diagram. I missed that Shaddy explained this, too.

Just to redeem things a little (or make a bigger fool of myself), doesn't White win the fight if he connects below instead of playing C19 in the game? A case of big eye versus no eye?

Bill's look better. I call them Bill's because I can't see a post by Shaddy where he presents them. What post # is that in?
If I had remembered correctly I probably would not have found the following sequence.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Yes, I think you're correct. Unless black has a sneaky move somewhere, it looks like white wins by 1 liberty:ez4u wrote: Just to redeem things a little (or make a bigger fool of myself), doesn't White win the fight if he connects below instead of playing C19 in the game? So, I guess the fact that I played C19 in the game proves that I didn't care enough about the capturing race to read out this sequence.
That's a big problem.
