@white: Have you guys consulted on the scheduling issue? We BLACK players tend to congregate around 5:00PM GMT, and we have set ourselves a goal of posting our move by 6:30PM GMT. ( That is 10:30AM PST, 7:30AM ET )

I doubt the game will be decided from this move in the opening, though :-)

Maybe, maybe not. I worry that they might cap us.

Yeah, I think K4 is good for center and maybe better for the right side. It also has nice balance with the bottom right 3-4 stone. So in that sense, I like K4.

K3 is more territorial. For example, with K4, white has a nice follow-up later:

and black is open at 'a'.

I kind of like K4 better than K3 in some aspects, too. It's really a hard choice for me.

That's another reason why I think approaching is simpler, and can't be bad:

Black breaks symmetry. :)

When I was learning go, :bc: was heresy, extending before playing the enclosure. But play is freer these days. Still, I am not thrilled by the play.

:bc: makes :w6: unappetizing, as it lies where White wants to extend. Besides, :b7: becomes ideal, working with :bc:. Note: :b7: instead of Ba, because that invites Wb.

:w6: looks good, not in the least because it threatens Wa, forcing Black into a low posture. It is my prediction. :)

My first thought is that this is not the biggest move by black, as it's claiming the least valuable side, and low. However, it does give black a good followup in making a corner enclosure, and another in pressuring our lower left stone.

I've thrown out a bunch of moves here that seem worth considering to me. I'm not too worried about a black approach to the lower left, we can always play kosumi or the two space extension to get out of trouble, and I am reluctant to play a corner enclosure with black's move there.

My thinking with a, e, f, and g is to limit black's lower side and make :b5: look slow. Approaches to the upper left look to build the bigger top and/or break up black's right side potential. I suppose we could consider wedging on the right as well, but it's not my first choice. I think I favour A and maybe G the most, followed by the top-side moves, and then the closer approaches. B may just revert to the previously discussed chinese opening.

Let me know if this sounds reasonable or if you disagree, and then we can look at moves in more detail?

As for scheduling, it's easiest for me to get on here during normal business hours, EST (GMT -5). However, it depends on how busy I am. Weekends and evenings as such are very variable.

@White
I don't like blacks move,feels a bit weird.
I think we should play a far approach to lower right in order to prevent black shimari
I prefer low approach and I assume something like this happens:

still k3 looks weird in my eyes.

I dislike the higher approach since black can simply take the corner and k3 works fine with blacks shimari

Is the marked stone in a good place?

The marked black stone looks fairly ideal to me in this circumstance.

Are you all comfortable if black tenukis white's low far approach in order to approach the bottom left or take a big point? My only concern with it is that it's not the most forceful move, but I think it should work out. It was certainly my first instinct.

If you are, I'm set to play it.

In keeping with the miai theory expressed earlier, I vote for
'a' or 'b'. Their #6 stone is far enough away that we can tenuki with little cost.

We could grab some side territory with 'c' or a corner with 'd', but both of those seem to give too much credit to a move that is, IMHO, a bit timid.

White did not make the one space high approach, but if he had, and then Black had pincered at 7, "a", or "b", :w8: would be a good move, I think. Playing in the corner now or simply running would risk making :b5: look good. :w8: offers support to :w6: in the ensuing fight. Depending on the play, sacrificing :w6: is an option.

This kind of play goes way back, BTW. Here is an example where Honinbo Dosaku played it in 1674. :)

Opening theory was in its infancy, as evidenced by :b9:, which is a kyu move today. Surely :b17: looked reasonable at the time, but :w18: takes advantage of its low posture. There are a number of examples of corner pincer followed by a low extension and shoulder blow reply from the 17th and 18th centuries.
