"Get Strong at Tesuji", which has 534 quite easy problems for your level, or "501 Tesuji Problems" are very good books to train your mind on finding the best local moves.

Thank you for your recommendations. I worked my way through Get Strong at Tesuji and while I find it quite enjoyable to read I don't believe it made me improve much. Davies' Tesuji on the other hand has really helped my play. It gives a great overview of standard tesuji and makes you remember them. Get Strong at Tesuji looks more randomly compiled and it doesn't name the Tesujis used, so I won't remember them as reoccuring Tesuji but take them as 'problem solution' and forget them more easily - like killing moves in L&D problems which usually aren't distinguished by names and/or sorted by shape either.

Ps.:The reply comes late, but I had to finish the two Tesuji books before writing it. ;)

So, where are we all at?

I'm sitting on KGS 3k right now, and I think I should be able to easily make it to 2k by the end of the year. It's not KGS 1d, but it's good progress, nonetheless. :D

I'm not even solid 3k. Most likely I will reach this by end of the year, well hopefully. Still, Marcus said it, good progress this year =)

Why should we get less new players than one year ago?

Because go will become less and less popular in the entire world. People will play things such as SC2 instead...
(I said I wasn't optimistic. ;-) )

(But honestly, popularity goes in waves, and I fear that when popular icons such as HNG travels longer and longer into the past, we will see a diminishing number of players. I really do hope I am wrong.)

Then do what you can to change it! :)

My life got very busy suddenly and I am about 2-3 months "behind schedule"... I set my deadline as Jan. 31 2011 and I currently hope to be at least 2k by then; I feel I will reach 3k level soon. Hopefully I will reach 1d by the end of April at the latest - one year after I started this goal.

I'm around 1k kgs I think. My rank is turned off and I don't play that many games so I'm not sure. I play one of my friends at Go club (who is 3d on kgs) with 3 stones and win about 50%. Also the few games I have played on kgs recently I beat a 2k by quite a bit, lost to a 1k by less than 4 points (I made a reading error in the late endgame that cost me ~12 points), and had some decent games against Dan level players.

I'm hoping to get to 1d by the end of this year or the end of January next year. I started playing in December 2009.

it took me less than 6 month to reach 1D when i started.
since then progress was so slow i was frustrated for a while.
now i dont really have any urge to become stronger than i am so i just enjoy my game.

i say it again fyi: you progress will be slow. 1 level up might take you more than a year.

What are you talking about, you learned the rules and 6 months later you were already 1d??? Nooo!
How old were you then?

I know the rules since 1997 but was not playing seriously. 3 years ago when I was about 8-9k I started trying to improve and now I am still struggling around 3-4k at different servers. So around 4-5 stones in 3 years! Not very fast, is it?

Are there many dan players out there who reached 1d in less than a year?
If you say no, Elwood and I will come here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week.

i was 18.
reaching 1 dan level in one year is not that hard if you really work on it.
i practically lived in go club studying and playing.
i have seen many young players who did samething i did reached 1d level in 6 month so nothing surprising.

I know someone who made 5D EGF in five years, but it took him one year to become SDK - so everything is possible ; )

So how many people in this group accomplished their goal of 1 dan in 2010?
