@ lovelove - Former and latter are usually used when you've previously mentioned two things in a sentence. Then former refers to the first thing and latter to the last thing mentioned. In the case of your diagrams, it's not entirely clear which branch you mean when you tell us to read the former one first. Is "always read the top branch first" what you mean? Btw, often native English speakers need to re-read a sentence when "former" and "latter" appear, so you might as well use something else anyway.
