I figured out a way to add the "mark forums read" thing to all pages, but it's not possible to make a "mark malkovich read" button because it's four separate forums. It either has to mark all forums read, or just one forum. :-/ I am researching the "ignore forum" feature, but it's not a simple change, unfortunately.

How does it work here then?
viewforum.php?f=26
This is the link it creates for me, which marks all Malkovich games read:
index.php?hash=313d222c&mark=forums

The "hash" bit seems to be important, but don't know how it's generated. Presumably it's easy to copy-paste in the PHP, no?

Initially I wrote about my change of thoughts regarding Malkovich games here, but it ballooned to a very large post so I just transferred it to a blog as a post: http://ywchoe.com/?p=249

I completely agree with Magicwand here:

if it aint broke dont fix it.

Currently, I enjoy the forum a lot, because of the Malkovich games. I really like the games where Araban, Joaz, Kirby, ... are providing detailed commentary, which is very helpful. I also enjoy the Magicwand series - huge fan here. They are very entertaining, and they made me to start again playing white and giving handicap stones. :D

I am not really sure what some people are complaining about - haven't read the whole thread though. If you are thinking about changing something, then you might as well change something in regards to rule discussions, which I do not find very useful for myself and might be irritating for a beginner. I am not saying that you should do that. Just saying: currently this forum is very active and enjoyable - do not change it!

But where?!

Actually, I think a game between Araban and Magicwand would be a nice gesture after a somewhat heated debate. It also suggests the, in my opinion, right solution: Keep the Malkovich games together - both those in the style of Araban and those in the style of Magicwand. Personally, I enjoy both kinds equally.

The hash doesn't indicate what forum needs to be marked as read. If you look at the link on the index of all forums, you'll see it has the same hash. If you go into an individual forum, you'll see it's a different link with an "f" parameter saying which forum to mark as read.

Main Index:
index.php?hash=471fccfc&mark=forums

Forum category:
index.php?hash=471fccfc&mark=forums

Individual forum:
viewforum.php?hash=471fccfc&f=37&mark=topics

So, you can see the first two are identical. If you click the link in the Malkovich category it will mark the whole site as read, not just those four forums.

So if the Malkovich games were combined into one forum (At least temporarily) this might let you create a button easily to do the job?

Yes. And I don't think that would be a huge sacrifice. Right now the 1 on 1 forum has dozens of games. The others have a total of 8 combined; I don't think they merit three whole separate forums.

I recommend either combining them temporarily and adding a button to mark them as read, or at least adding a button for the 1v1 Malkovich game. As you said, the vast majority of games are 1v1, so that would cover the worst of it. This would only be a workaround until the ideal solution is decided upon and implemented, but it seems like it would go a long ways.

That said, if this button is implemented, I will never click it (I love reading Malkovich games). I simply think it's the easiest way to deal with the concern others have expressed.

I swear that link used to be different, and only marked Malkovich games as read. This link did the trick, though:
viewforum.php?hash=197f296b&f=26&mark=forums

It marked as read all games in the four Malkovich forums, and nothing else.

Huh... It is possible that the change I made to let me use the "Mark forums read" link on the "unread posts" and "new posts" page broke it on the category page... I'll look into fixing that and adding a "Mark Malkovich read" link when I get a chance.

That's really a temp fix until an ignore feature gets added.

I agree with Araban. Some games, while having little commentary, have huge entertainment value. Some moves are very insightful by themselves without commentary. The moves made by a player sometimes can give hints of what he is thinking.
