I think it's Seki in Gote. Thruth be told, I didn't read this out. I knew, I had some bigger endgame involving a throw-in and I was satisfied with the position (yeah, Kageyama would expell me from his school ^^).

Yeah, my first two rated games since a long while. Two losts, back to 4k. I guess, I have to take that back with "almost 2k".

Finished "One Thousand and One Life-and-Death Problems" today. Out of 1001, I had approximately 32 (maybe three more, I got confused once along the way) wrong. Now I'll do a second reading of "Making Good Shape".

As for playing rated games: Everytime I do so, I play unthinkable sucky. Twice I could just save the game because my opponent played even suckier while having an almost won game (giving me a Ko, where no Ko exists or by killing half the board because he let me cut him for no reason).

I don't know, maybe people play more serious in rated games or I play much weaker. Time will show.

Just finished my second reading of "Making Good Shape". I did considerably better than the first time, where I got like 30% of the moves right. Now it's more like 50%. Still some problems are just above me, mostly when it comes to make shape for a weak group by playing a very strange move which has at first nothing to do with the local situation.
It seems that these couple of problems are a bit off because the presented moves really only work in this special situation. But maybe it should teach to always search for such strange moves ^^

Now, I actually wanted to give "501 Tesuji Problems" a new try, but somehow I like Maeda's Intermediate Level Problems more for the moment, so I go with those. I think it will be a change, more reading and less guessing =D

As for playing games, I'm a bit short on time at the moment, so I still hold onto my 3k rank. But I'm confident, I will reach 2k, when I'm going to play rated games, at least I have a good score against 2ks.

Maeda's Intermediate Level Problems is a funny book. Said to offer problems from 7 Kyu to 2 Dan and which problems do I get mostly wrong? The easy ones oO
I'm far more successful with the problems around 5-7 (the book structures the problems in circles of ten, one is the easiest problem, 10 the most difficult), every so often I even get the last problems right.

But I like the book it really is fun : ) If it has some benefit for my Go, I don't know. Yesterday I only put myself in Atari and not just some unimportant stones, no, four cutting stones with a ~20+ point value. The very same game, I did not kill a group of my opponent but was focussed of just cutting his tail... Again something like 20 points? ^^
Lucky for me I could win the game with a little nasty sequence shown below (yes, my opponent should have read that out and he could have won with Komi).

Your first one is right! What do you say, for which strength is the problem?

What about :b8: here?

The third one I'd set around 3-5k. Finding and moving past the ko without rejecting the first move is the hard part. The other initial moves are fairly easy to refute.

[go]$$Wc White to save the marked stones
$$ ----------------------
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . 3 2 1 O X . |

$$ . . . O X O . O X O . |
$$ . . . . X O . O O O . |
$$ . . . . X X X X X X . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |[/go]

I couldn't refute :b8: at all, so how about this? B doesn't have a move--if atari on the Q18 or N18 groups, P16 is connect-and-die. If extend to P19, throw in at P17 and B cannot survive.

I would never see this solution in a game (yet) so I can believe it is higher than 3k.

I can't get the first problem at all, it makes me feel dumb--there just isn't all that much to the problem. Obviously I'm missing something.

Here's the solution to the first one. Found this one pretty easy, did it pretty much instantaneously but it's a really common tesuji and not too hard to read. I would rate it maybe 7-10k.

I've not tried the second one yet. The third one I would say was much, much harder than the first (I found a ko very quickly but finding the solution was very tricky, took several minutes. My instincts gave me the correct first move right away but after I found the ko I was like "hmm..." and dismissed other moves before going back to it.

Third one I'd say is maybe 1d level? Pretty misleading with that ko.

Yes, these are the right moves. Congratulations : ) You can see the estimated ranks (from the book) for the individual Tsumegos within my hide-tags. Although I find those a bit off, but maybe I'm just better/familiar with certain shapes like diagramme 1 and 2.
