Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Here is a review of the game from black's perspective.
Overall, I think black did pretty well (better than me in this case, as he won!). Some points were:
1. Pressing white down on the 4th line in the opening is a risky strategy. His intent was to make a big moyo, and he succeeded. But it's still risky - he doesn't have many points if I live within it, for example.
2. After white was able to escape, black kept white split from the group on the right - which is a pretty good plan. The downside is that it makes his center group's influence pretty weak. It might make sense to let white connect to the group on the right, and then play the star point on top to make nice central influence. Nonetheless, there was certainly value to splitting me apart.
Those were the biggest things I'd point out, though, the second one is debatable.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Here is a final review of Game 1 from my own perspective, again.
Learning points overall, from this game:
1. Taking 4th line territory is good, but since the opponent's plan to make a huge moyo was obvious, I should have reconsidered. It may be OK for white, but it's risky. I could have avoided that risk.
2. Play lighter moves that are more sharp, especially when trying to live in the opponent's area.
3. Before aji keshi, maybe just living inside quickly would be good. I played lots of aji keshi and made the opponent thick, as Shaddy noticed.
4. When things aren't going well, don't keep making a heavier group. Be willing to sacrifice and move on.
5. Reading better is always desired.

General learning point: Trying to review in detail takes a long time. I have 5 games to review from the week, and I've only done 1 so far...

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Aji-keshi from Game 2
First point might be this one: This already isn't joseki, but it's still probably not best to play the peep right now. I can do that kind of thing if I have a precise plan that works out. At this point, I should probably just play in a normal way:
Then this series of moves are all aji keshi: Since the sequence doesn't work, I should simply try to live inside first, instead of making all of the bad exchanges: Still not a great result since I didn't play this well earlier, but at least I don't have useless exchanges that don't work. Then, if he tries to kill me, maybe then the cross attach, etc., will produce a good result, since I'm already stronger and have more liberties.
I think that these are the main aji keshi points in this game. I had other issues in this game, which I'll address in the review.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
It's not what I had scheduled, but I will aim to finish the remaining reviews tomorrow. It's getting late, and I am running out of energy.
Realistically, given my current situation, the review can usually only happen during the evening... So, see you in about 20 hours.
Still no go problems done...

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Highlights of my mistakes from Game 2
Position 1: The marked move is a mistake. I think it's reasonable to simply invade the 3-3: White will get sente, but I think the reduction is modest, and I can aim for further reduction later. I still have a decent position on the bottom right.
Position 2: Things obviously aren't going according to plan. I screwed up in the top left, and will just continue to get attacked. It's like playing out a broken ladder.
So the move above is just making things worse. I should suck up my pride and admit that I am playing a "broken ladder", and play elsewhere. I think this is a good candidate: There is still aji in the top left, and I don't think white will take it away in the near future: The top left was painful, but I think I'd be recovering in the position above.
Position 3 An overplay. I think it's simpler and better to simply jump: Position 4:
Obviously, I'm following white's plan. Getting the extra territory is big, but I think white is getting a better deal with the framework white is developing on top. Instead, how about this?
It doesn't connect my stones nicely like 'a' does, but it disrupts white's formation.
Position 5 Splitting white is certainly bigger. But I think it misses the big picture, which is to reduce white's framework: Splitting with 'a' is always something I can come back to, and if he fixes it, I get a free move.
I think those are some of the key points from Game 2.
So to summarize learning points for me:
1. When things go awry locally, perhaps I can tenuki and leave the aji there. As I invest more into something that doesn't work, the situation gets worse and worse, making my chances of winning go further and further down.
2. Keep in mind the big picture, compared to finding a local move.
3. Don't go in too deep when it doesn't work.
4. Going with the opponent's plan is good when it benefits me. But if it benefits him too much, still resist. It's a tricky balance that I haven't seem to have achieved.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
By the way, I think I'm going to change things up for next week. I will try to do a more detailed review, from both perspectives on the day that I play the game. That's when it's fresh in my mind.
Then on Saturday, I'll aim for a quick single-pass review through all games. I think this is more manageable.

Game 3, Aji Keshi review
Position 1
Of course, my wannabe AlphaGo move seems aji keshi. I should study this more before using it a lot.
Also aji keshi...
Aji keshi...
Super aji-keshi
Kind of aji-keshi... Anyway, bad.
So even in a game that I won, I played several aji-keshi moves...

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
A couple of comments on Game 1.
The wedge looks reasonable at this point.
Allowing
does not help the left side. OTOH, Black may be able to play at 66 himself, threatening to cut off the six White stones and sacrificing the
stones with sente.
Maybe something like
-
is good. Not only does the double keima give Black some Lebensraum, it threatens the
stones and calls to the
stone.
Maybe
is better for White.
So maybe the push is good. Next if
,
takes the double keima.
If
plays the hane, Black can cut and make a fight of it.
Edit: Removed reading error.

Overall: Both players underestimated the value of black's outside influence.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
Final review of Game 3, from my perspective:
Here is one of the pro games referenced above. The shape is a little different, but maybe it's OK to just hane from that AlphaGo-ish shape:
Here is the other one:
Between the two examples from pro games, the first one here is more with my style. I don't know how to utilize the influence that well that the guy gets in the second case.

It's nice to split, but there isn't room to make a base if white encloses:Bill Spight wrote:A couple of comments on Game 1.

Now that you've mentioned playing on the left, I'd be inclined to say that tihs puts more pressure on the corner:
However, I can agree that white's pincer from this side is now also natural.
Nonetheless, since the latter of these two options affects the corner, it seems more reasonable to me. Maybe I will understand better if you can elaborate on the plan after white does the pincer/enclosure after the wedge, as suggested above.
True, and good point. The three stones are not that big now. I agree with that.Bill Spight wrote: Allowingdoes not help the left side. OTOH, Black may be able to play at 66 himself, threatening to cut off the six White stones and sacrificing the

Indeed, I agree. I think I might have listed this as a variation in one of the reviews, minus the Lebensraum.Bill Spight wrote: Maybe something like-

True. Maybe it's naive to think white responds to the peep. Bending for white feels so nice (as white).

Re: Kirby's Study Journal
So back to game 3, I have the following learning points.
1. Don't underestimate thickness and/or influence.
2. Avoid aji-keshi and super-aji-keshi, as is a common pattern of mine (revealed by Shaddy).
3. Keep in mind the big picture. I could have selected a different joseki, or modified joseki since what I really needed was the outside. If I get a big shape on the outside after he approaches the top right corner, that will be nice to complement my global influence.
