Check as many as apply.

I realize this has probably been done before and better, but "become a dan player or die" made me curious.

Loons forgot my option:

I like it - disproportionately - for the study of emergent behavior. ( of stones, not of people! )

I also like the game as a discipline, regardless of my ability.

I think the fact you put "Personal playing ability" at the top of the list is interesting in and of itself.

Also how "The thrill of victory" was an afterthought edited in below "Loons forgot to put my option", right?

OH YES! If it weren’t for this I’d hardly ever have somebody to play face to face.

One thing I would add is "experiencing improvement". I would say it's different from "personal playing ability" in that playing ability is about the level you are currently at, whereas improvement for me relates to noticing yourself being stronger at something than you were just a short time ago.

Whenever I hear "the thrill of victory" I can't help but thinking "and the agony of defeat." While I can't say that I enjoy the agony, it is one of the things that I care disproportionately about.

P.S. I really like fireproof's idea of the game as a discipline. Sounds like a good approach. Certainly better than my: excuse to break some furniture.
