Go players in southern France / Barcelona ?

Hi guys!

On monday I'm leaving on a hitchhiking trip with my girlfriend to southern France (Toulouse area) and I was wondering if there are any go players in the area who maybe have a place to stay or could show us a bit around and of course, play a game or two along the way ;) I don't know how much time we'll have since we'll also be visiting friends and maybe make a trip to the ocean but we'll see...

From 6th to around the 10th of august I'll be on my own and I'm thinking about visiting Barcelona. It would be nice to get to know some go-folks from there, too. And a couch to crash on would be great as well ^^

So I hope to meet some of you guys on the way, send me a message if you have some time and if not I wish all of you a great summer anyway!

I don't think the Barcelona go club will be on in August, but meeting days are tuesdays from 20 onwards and IIRC, fridays, same time but at a Chinese restaurant, usually. Most locals avoid the city in August, too hot and too many tourists :D

Hi
Won't be there before 20th August but there is an house hosted by a go player, Véronique Lamour, near Perpignan so just between Toulouse and Barcelone. It's called La Maison de Vérotte. See there : http://lamaisondeverotte.com/
If you plan to go there, ask Vérotte : there are often french go players who come during summer. You can play go and learn pétanque which is also interesting ;)

Regards

Thanks for the hint! I've been at Vero's place for 4 days and I had a great time. Nice people and atmosphere, great food and the weather was perfect, too ^^

I also played a few games of go but far more time was spent playing petanque all through the night, which I instantly liked. I even think I might take it up as a hobby back home...

So, thanks again, definitely a great place to spend your summer!

Hi,

Sometimes I wish I can mix pétanque rules (or curling or bowling...) with GO rules so that I can strike some annoying stones  ...

hehe, that would be nice ;)

or maybe also the other way round: if you surround an opponents boule with your own, it gets removed from the playing area.

There's a game that gets played at the US Go Congresses every now and then that it similar to this or carrom. Basically, each side lines up stones on the star point row, say 3 on the star points or 4 evenly spaced, and takes turn striking one of their stones to try and knock the opponents stones off of the board. I've never heard of a name for it, but I can verify that it's extremely satisfying to knock a 5d down to a 2 or three stone handicap this way :)

Perhaps obviously, the game ends when one player has no stones left on the board.

Edited for spelling.

Ing stones are basically the tournament standard here, as so many sets were given away by the Ing foundation.
