"Shape Up!" licensing

I have been prompted towards making the book "Shape Up!" available under an open license, and would like to do do under CC-by-SA. I have advised my co-author Seong-June Kim about this by email. So as not to create a doubtful legal situation for reusers, I'd like him to agree, naturally.
I have not heard back from Kim, using the email address I was given by one of the Cambridge players, which was current a year or so ago. If anyone here has more direct contact with Kim, I'd be grateful to hear more about his view. Of course he may not check his mail so regularly.

Despite that, it is now 2015, and I intend to follow through with my intention to declare "Shape Up!" released under CC-by-SA. That will probably not satisfy a lawyer, and may deter anyone in business to some extent. All the same, I have been in a comparable situation with another book, and there the Gordian knot was cut.
For further information, contact me (can be done via

With some help, I have been able to speak to Seong-june Kim about the book. So I can confirm that "Shape Up!" is released under CC-by-SA.

THANK YOU, Charles, this is
great news, a wonderful gift to the Go community worldwide!
Two questions:
- Are you going to edit the book (frontispice? front matter? title page?) to reflect this fact?
- Which source do you recommend to obtain the complete book?
- The Badukworld version only seems to offer 12 chapters and one problem set (maybe I just overlooked?), while …
- the overview on GoBase.org shows 15 chapters, three problem sets, plus “Index of shapes”, “Index of terms”, “List of proverbs” (it’s divided into five parts, the fifth part, “Theory”, includes chapters 13–15). These files appear to be available only to GoBase members.

Thank you for making it easier for people to get a legal copy of your helpful book! Shape Up is a great contribution to the English go literature.

Not intending to edit it. For intellectual property mavens, CC-by-SA licensing does not affect the underlying copyright.

I have actually been contacted by someone who is interested in posting the PDFs; I'll update this thread if and when that hosting is sorted out. Also, this business was prompted by a go teacher who is interested in producing a derived work.

Hi Charles,
Is it ok if I try to convert it to the gobook format ? (just converting, no distribution or what ever...)

Hello oca,
oca wrote:Is it ok if I try to convert it to the gobook format ? (just converting, no distribution or what ever...)
I’m not Charles, but the CC SA license on the second page says this:
You are free to:- Share - copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt - remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.
The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
Under the following terms:- Attribution - You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the icensor endorses you or your use.
- ShareAlike - If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
- No additional restrictions - You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
The complete license text is linked there, too, and is here:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcodeSo, it seems that you may even redistribute it as a gobooks file.

For the record, presuming the conversion goes well, we'd be happy to host the resulting gobook file too

What Bonobo said. The idea of the license is that people are able to produce their own derived works. It is nice to hear about them, for example here, but you don't need any permissions.

Thanks Charles, So will start the conversion.
anoek, thanks for your proposition

, I think that wuill be great if both the pdf and the gobook will be at the same place !
I will start a topic for that purpose and maybe it may also be useful to people who want to learn the gobook format.
