If you had the chance to scroll through the Go(Weiqi) players FB page, you'd see that I am advertising a hon-kaya goban for $240. It's a very nice board, however, there's only two days left from today (Jan 9th) for you to agree on whether or not you'd like it. Please let me know ASAP if you're interest.







The board measure 24 cm in height with legs, without is 11.6 cm.

Type of wood used? (please give latin name if possible) Also this is itame cut(actualy no straight grain at all) so this is why the price is low.

The price is low since it is slab sawn ( japanese call it itame cut when dealing with boards), masame (quarter sawn) is really expensive especially if made out of torreya nucifera (the real kaya) since the higest class masame requires you to quarter saw it and exclude the rings around the center of the wood (heart). You need a really wide tree to do that and since kaya grows slowly (like 400-600 years) you get the picture.

This, and the type of wood used (probably spruce) are the reason for the low price.

But the board looks nice, however I prefer the masame cuts (straight grain on the top side)

This has to do with the angle and direction of how to saw the tree ?

Indeed it does

As I explained, on 2nd picture you can see that the top side is a tangential plane meaning the direction of the tree growing was horizontal where as in masame cuts where the top side is pure radial plane (no heart growth rings is a special type of masame and requires a large diameter of the tree and this is why it is really expensive).

- Slight dent upper right in side view; any other blemishes, scratches, damages ? - The 8 corners are not as "sharp" as it use to be, but nothing else noticeable unless you have a habit of planting your face 3 inches from the board when you play
- How much is shipping from your location to California ? I'll be shipping from JP, so the shipping would either be $170 EMS (ETA 4 days to CA). or $140 SAL (ETA approx. 2-3 weeks.)

- What was its original price new ? ( Or your paid price for it ? )- The owner said she paid around 24,000YEN at the time she bought it (2012). The exchange rate then was around 80YEN to a USD. So around $300.

She said the wood is hon-kaya, which I'm guessing is the same as shin-kaya?

The cut is kiomote from the look of it to me. Don't get all fancy, I don't really care

Who knows, I bought a different board but is slightly older than this. The different is the other one is masame cut. I might, just might, keep this for myself and sell the other one if I don't like it. Just might

Hon-kaya is NOT the same as shin-kaya.

Hon-kaya is "real" kaya, whereas shin-kaya is spruce.
