My natural instinct is to move out, but black easily makes territory on top, and I feel awkward with my white stones. For example:

In the second I would expect Black to cut for 7. So playing 4 at q16 is one way to avoid that.

1st - tenuki and if he plays another move, it's worse than any enclosure. 2nd - either push out and make empty triangle or bump his stone and jump out, both are ok

The 2nd one is covered in Lee Chang-ho's Korean book 'How to handle hamete'. It's quite a fun book, with maybe 60 hamete showing falling for and refuting them. It's also got this similar one which Matthew Macfadyen used against me once!

Thanks, everyone. And thanks for the book reference, Uberdude. As it turns out, I already own that book.

I guess it shows how much I need to study the go books I already have :-p
