I went to the supermarket yesterday to buy some coffee, and there's an Asian lady working the cash register there. I thought, "there's no way she's following the Alpha Go games", but I asked anyway because I like talking to her.
..And she said, "oh yeah, this is terrible news, soon professionals are going to be out of teaching jobs once computers replace them".
I was honestly surprised she knew all about it, looks like Go really is big in Asia!

Toronto has a few nice, big Go clubs (including at U. of T.), but you probably knew this already.

A similar situation happened to me with someone who had been to Korea, when I then found out that in Korea, it falls into the category of "news stories the news channels seem to keep forgetting they covered merely five minutes ago (or should I say, five minutes Alpha-Go)", to the point where a few the few who may not be so involved could find it annoying

.
(quite impressive considering other recent events in the area).
Local results pending further probes.

I think it will be awhile before computer programs replace humans when it comes to teaching Go. Go is too complicated. I don't think computer programs can teach fundamentals or the abstract thinking required in playing Go. You'd also have to have the program point out the mistakes the player made as well and what it could have done better or needs to work on.
